Geneva/Ferney area next week?
I have not been here very long and haven't had much of a chance yet to get out exploring the area. Next week (Tuesday-Friday) I will be entertaining a guest and want to show them some highlights of this region. It will be a good chance for me to see some new things as well.

Any suggestions, particularly if you know of any vineyards that are open to the public, or perhaps a breathtaking view, a nice place to have breakfast, great places to hike, would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

CB

for vineyards, i'd head for Satigny/Dardagny/Russin (due west after Meyrin, if you come from Ferney). call ahead to make arrangements, but normally free.

lots of hiking to do in the Jura, which is the closest to Ferney. go up to Le Col de le Faucille (after Gex) or take a left turn somewhere about halfway between Gex and Divonne (i realise that's pretty vague, but there aren't many choices and i'm sure you can ask locals if you see any) - that should get you to a nice place.

for good meals in Ferney, L'Hotel de France or the Chanteclair will do - a bit pricey but very nice.

There's a huge market in Ferney on Saturday mornings. Great place to pick up food or just to soak up the atmosphere. Lots of nice cafes for a coffee, too.

If you have a car, I definitely agree with the suggestion of hiking at the Col de la Faucille. Follow the main road out of Ferney towards the Jura mountains through Segny, Cessy and Gex and follow signs for Col de la Faucille. Plenty of walks marked with yellow signposts and plenty of parking.

Great food at Refuge de Florimont halfway up the mountain on the road between Gex and the Col de la Faucille +33 (0)4 50 41 88 59 and great views over the Leman basin if you ask for a window table.

One of my favourite days out with visitors: take the F bus from Ferney towards Geneva, get off at Appia stop, turn left and walk uphill with the Musee dela Croix Rouge on your right. Walk for 10 mins and then turn right into the grounds of the Chateau des Penthes (oppostite the American Mission). The restaurant is open for lunch and it's lovely to sit outside if it's warm enough (022 734 48 65). After lunch, walk downhill towards the lake and bear right. Leave the chateau grounds, walk under the railway line and turn right into the Jardin Botanique. Visit the huge glasshouses and then take the foot tunnel under the lake road. Turn right and walk along the lake side towards the centre of Geneva. At the Paquis landing stage take the little yellow boat (mouette) to the quai Gustav Ador and walk out along the jetty to the jet d'eau. Walk back through the Jardin Anglais and over the Pont du Mont Blanc to the railway station to take the F bus home to Ferney. Alternatively, drive to the Chateau des Penthes, leave the car there and take the 8, 28 or F bus back to Appia and walk back to the chateau or take the V or Z bus from the station. Both stop right outside (Penthes stop).

If you're feeling active, head for the Lac de Divonne and walk, cycle or rollerblade around the lake, have a game of mini golf or try the treetop adventure at Forestland. There's a big market in Divonne on Sunday mornings, too.

The Red Cross will be on your left. The UN and Hotel School will be on your right.
I heartily second the Chayeau de Penthes suggestion. It's a beautiful place.
