Golden Pass - any tips?

Hi

Im planning a family trip on the Golden Pass in May. Does anyone who's done it have any helpful tips? We live in Geneva which I guess means wie'd be picking the train up from Montreux. Im trying to figure out the route and whether to do a day or an overnight trip, I'd be grateful for any help!

Thanks

Jitka

Hi Jitka

We have done it a couple of years ago and we caught train from Cornavin and changed at Montreux - was very easy as I recall. I booked it all online. A day trip was plenty for us - gave us a couple of hours in Gstaad. Hope that helps

Hi Jeffery

Thank you for your reply.

Was the train journey/views as spectalular as I imagine? My mum has seen a video where the train was climbing hills in the Alps and going through beutiful very swiss scenery, but I am not sure if that was filmed as a promotion for GoldenPass and was a combination of all the trips they offer.. - such as the Rochers-de-Naye.
Her dream is now of course to see everything she's seen on the video so I am wondering which trip to choose.
Is the Golden Pass to Gstaad using the same tracks as other trains except that the carriages have a panoramic view? Did you think the journey was exceptional or was it also the time in Gstaad which you remember? I am basically trying to decide between the Montreux - Gstaad trip and the one taking you to peak Rocher-de-Naye.

Thanks!

Both trips are panoramic but should you choose to go to Rocher-de-Naye make it on a clear day. The view of Lake Geneva and surrounding mountains is fab.

Thanks Glenys!

As our visitors will be staying with us for only couple of days we don't have much choice but to go the given Saturday. We'll have to hope the weather on the day of the trip will be in our favour!

Have to agree with Glenys - we went luckily on a clear day in middle of winter and it was beautiful. The train itself was a normal one I think but you could still take in all the scenery. ( I have included a couple of pics)

you can actually choose the type of train when you book: there is the classic one, with old-style carriages, and the modern ones, called Panoramic. I recommend booking the Panoramic one as the windows go all the way to the ceiling and they guarantee the best possible views.

Yes, as the other helpful contributors have already said, it is a superb day out, at whatever time of year. However, the weather should be good on the day you choose.

We actually went on 04/01 last year and the views were fantastic, albeit that the day was very short of course.

If you would like to eat where it is not too expensive, then the Co-Op in Gstaad has a resturant on the upper floor which is even open on Sundays and is buffet style so you can have as much or as little as you choose.

There are hikes all around the village too. Journey there and back is beautiful.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Thank you Sheila. As it will be few of us and we are the hosts, the Coop restaurant will be a great option.

I too hope for a good weather!

Already very much looking forward to it :-)

Another option is to leave early from Gva and go all the way to Luzern via golden route, stay there overnight, and go for a boat trip + visit to a Transport museum both of which are very nice. in the evening you can catch 3 hours train to Gva. So overall, exactly 2 days trip. Luzerne is also very cute/special city to walk around.
