Does this mean the remaining % have read the books or don't lie about not having read them? Wink

even if you would have read/finished all the books in the list it's no criterion for being someone sophisticated. this would be a "consumer" kind of thinking – but consuming a book is not "reading". reading is what happens in the background, where what you read is distilled and "bottled" into thoughts that mature to an opinion about what you've read – sometimes over a period of time. its not just about knowing whats written inside of them … sorry for being oldschool Laughing

I can quite honestly say that apart from at school, I've never read a book..

I've read magazines, newspapers, instruction manuals, geek type network security books.. But never, ever a fictional story book. I find the whole concept completely daft and a waste of time.

** Bestime stories for the kids don't count!

Well I wouldnt really call it a lie e.g. I have Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (the 3 books) and it was a present, and the person who gave them to me often asked if I read them and I said yes, could nt tell him that the book bored me to death, I only finished 2 pages and I couldnt go further. I got these books 10 years ago and I havent read more tha 2 pages since then.

When we are kids, we all (well... most of us) learn that lying is bad, while in reality - and maybe in most cases - it's not.

You've missed out in a big way.  Reading fiction is relaxing and mind-expanding and it's never too late to start.  Give "1984" a go; you might surprise yourself.

I've read 1, 6, 9, and 10.  And lied about two of them to the English Lit.  teacher at school.  Oh, and now to you lot.

P.S. 1984 and LotR are both fantastic.  As are the other two, obviously...

3 , 6 , 7 and 9... I have read, mostly whilst studying literature at school...

Can't remember diddly squat about them though.

I think the context is more that the subject of a particular book comes up in conversation and someone implies that they have read it (sometimes using information from the TV or movie version) in order to join in and, in some cases, to avoid the risk of appearing dumb / uneducated / not part of the group.

I think that being able to lie is an important life-skill.  It's something I learned from Paul McCartney when we were sharing a flat together.

I never lied about one of the listed books. But...

In 11th grade, I had to write an exam about a German book from the 17th century ("Simplicius Simplicissimus"). I hated it and never read more than the first 50-60 pages. We had to discuss a section around pages 500-600 - which I did.

Approx. one third of my oral M.A. exam in Spanish Literature was about a book I hadn't read (although I knew it would come up).

I never actually had said I had read these books, but I think the above would count as lies, right?

Both exams went quite well, by the way. Cool

Well I have read

Hobbit by JRR Tolkien & To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee (10%)

And also cover to cover, very informative magazines

Sports Illustrated 'Swimsuit edition' and playboy.

And I only look at the photos in National Geographic, as I like animal pictures.

Sure. Thoughout my secondary school I claimed to have read books for assignments while I'd only read an abstract. This was common practice, especially because at some point we had to read 25-30 books per year.

I can't remember other instances where I lied about this, but I lie all the time so I wouldn't put it past me.

I've read 4 and 7.  I also read The Idiot by Dos&#@$sky and that was punishment enough for this idiot.

I never actually lied about reading particular books. However, when I was at uni I worked in a book store. People would come in and tell me about books they had read, what they liked about them, recommended authors, etc.

So, when someone asked me about a book or to give a recommendations I basically just repeated what other customers told me.

Hey, I never said I had read any of them.... people just assumed...
