Health insurance if you study in Geneva but live in France

Hello

Anybody could advise whether I need to take out a Swiss health insurance if I will be studying in Geneva for one year, but planning to live in France as it seems impossible to find a reasonable apartment in Geneva? I am an EU citizen and have a health insurance from my home country and I will work neither in France nor Switzerland.

Many thanks,

 Monika

Try AXA, they are always willing to help and point you in the right direction. We have had nothing but good service from them. If you need to speak to anyone particular, try Mr. Frederic Taloud in the Thonon-les-Bains office = he also speaks good English. Let us know if you need more help

Hello,

You should be exempted from the obligation to obtain insurance in Switzerland. Read this:

http://www.bag.admin.ch/themen/krankenversicherung/04114/04123/index.html?lang=en

04. Who can be exempted from the obligation to obtain insurance in Switzerland, and what procedure should be followed?

- people staying in Switzerland for purposes of basic or advanced training, such as students, pupils and trainees, and family members accompanying them;

- people residing in a member state of the EU, insofar as they may be exempted from the obligation to obtain insurance under the bilateral Agreement on Free Movement of Persons and Annex II thereto;

The best way to get more info is to ask at:

Office cantonal de la population
Service Étrangers et Confédérés
Rte de Chancy 88
1213 Onex

As a student, you will probably obtain Swiss permit G. In France your EHIC (European Health Insurance Cardfrom your home coutry is enough and you do not need to take out any other insurance.

Ciao & Good Luck
