Heatlh Insurance - Only here for 3 months

Hello, I'm now here - so this will be my first post....

They messed up on the dates on my visa for my 3 months internship here, so I had to apply for the residence permit. Now they are asking me for health insurance. Do I actually need that if I am only staying here for 3 months? I thought I didn't since it was a short term stay. Did I even actually need the permit since I am a Cdn citizen and will have Schengen visa after my work permit ends. I wondered if there would be problems if I left Switzerland on the weekends for Germany/Italy/France and couldn't come back.....

If I do need insurance do I have to have coverage starting today or from when I arrived.... this is just becoming much too difficult..... why couldn't they just gave me a visa for the dates I requested from the beginnning......

As a Canadian citizen you are allowed to stay in Switzerland for up to three months as a 'tourist'. In any other capacity you need a VISA, which is also three months long. Longer than that you will need a permit.

My suggestion, which is purely based on assumption, is that you get travel insurance for the three months that you are here.....instead of signing up for an expensive, year long contract.....and a VISA which was around 50 CAD four years ago.

Hi Nancy

By staying in Switzerland only 3 months, you should be able to get away of health insurance.

You should contact the department looking after people entering and going out of the country and registering the health care. This department is called SAM

Thanks but I am currently in Lausanne and not Geneva - would the same apply?

no. 38 - would I still be able to get travel insurance now that I am out of Canada?

Problem is I am not quite a tourist since I have a work permit - on a min. wage paid internship right now.
