My computer crashed. I’ve got a message telling me that it is because of a damaged file and that I need the Windows XP installation CD to repair it. The snag is, I bought the computer with Windows already installed, so I haven’t got it. Could someone lend it to me? That would be very very nice.

This is the classic textbook way of booting up a crashed PC
But it's not always straight forward as It assumes you have the correct version, language and COA to use a CD boot up or repair
i.e XP home,media or pro
SP1 or 2-soon SP3
you should of course have full data backups before attempting it or you could wipe the whole hard drive if you reformat accidentally
The safest way is to take out your hard drive and copy its data and programmes on an external HD case with a friends XP computer
Then you can safely boot up.repair or re.install the XP os-always assuming your crashed PC isn't because of a hardware, virus or spyware problem .
If you're not an experienced PC user, don't risk losing your data to save some money.
You can get a good new basic or used desktop with XP for a couple of hundred franks
PC s are like cars- you should service them and repair them-but replacing them before they collapse is a better policy
Good Luck

In the meantime, I found someone who has the CD, but I keep your suggestion in mind in case it doesn't work. Thanks a lot
