Help!

Hi all

I need good advice. We moved here a year ago, now my girls are 11 and 14. They go to local school en francais and the studies are going pretty well. However, especially the older one has no friends as apparently all the girls in her class have already formed groups years ago.

Any advice, where to find friends when you're 14 years old in Geneve? She speaks some English and French.

Many thanks in advance!

Is it maybe possible to join youngsters clubs like ymca or other groups? There are also church groups just in case you go to a church. If you were in Basel I would suggest joining a carneval group or Gugge Music group. Im sure even in Geneva there are music groups for youngsters, check your local newspapers or make an announcement in Coop, Migros or whereever one can do those.

Good luck Surprised

Hello Berit P!

First, where do you live in Geneva?  And do you know any of the parents of your daughter’s

class-mates?

Have you attended any parent-teacher meetings, for example?

If you live in the city of Geneva, go to the Information Office on “Pont de la Machine” where you will find a wealth of leaflets about leisure activities of all kinds and for all age-geoups.  The counter staff are very helpful and also speak English.

If you live in one of the communes, you’ll find similar information at your local “Mairie”.

You can also check out the “free” newspapers, the notice-boards in the Coop, Migros and so on.

It might be an idea to contact your daughter’s class teacher because girls do tend to form “cliques” in their early teens and sometimes one or two in the class are excluded for some unfathomable reason.

In any case, try to find an activity group that appeals to your daughter and encourage her to go it alone if necessary.  It will be valuable experience for the future and may also, over time,  even impress her class-mates.

Hope this helps and all the best, R.
