Help choosing an international school.

Hello everyone,

I'm glad to have found this website.

We will be moving to Geneva in a few months, and we need help picking the right school for our 4 year old. We sent an application to Ecole Int., but we have heard that spots are very limited, and we would like to apply to another school to be safe. Our current options are: Du Leman, Lancy, and the International School of Geneva.

Our daughter currently goes to a small pre-school in English only.  She loves her current school, and we are hoping to find the right environment for her in Geneva.  Although we know choosing a school is a matter of preference, we won't be able to visit schools before sending the initial application.... So any advice or personal experiences would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello I have been to several of them when I was younger and your choice really depends on what you are looking for

- top education

- international environment

- building strong conexions for the future (this one is very important but it matters more during high school and after)

Leman and international school of geneva give them best mix of international environment and top education for a private school

hope this help,

Eric

Carol - Our son is finishing at IIL this year after 5 years there and I have to say it was a great decision to have him there. Very much academically minded school with what I consider very good support systems in place. Absolutely no complaints at all. PM me if you need further info.

Good luck

Do you know where you are going to live?  If not, it’s the chicken or the egg situation:  choose the school and then find housing or find housing and then a school.

The schools you mention are located in different areas of the Canton and you surely won’t want a long or tricky commute for a four-year-old especially if, as you say, you have a second child.

If push comes to shove, you can always enroll your daughter in a local State school until there’s a space in one of the private institutions.  The overall standard of State education is pretty high and at her age she’ll pick up French in no time and that’s a great incentive for the parents to do likewise.

(It’s not uncommon in Geneva to hear youngsters

interpreting for their  non-francophone Moms in grocery stores!)

Obviously, it’s better to find both housing and schooling from the start, but children are resilient and a compromise solution for a bright four-year-old shouldn’t be a problem.  And you’ll also benefit by making acquaintance with other locally resident parents and youngsters.

Good luck, R.

Hi Ritchie,

Thank you for your comment.  We will likely live on the left bank of the lake. I believe La Grande Boissiere campus of Ecolint is in that area.

Inded, it is and would be a good choice or

IIL as Jeffrey has suggested.

Léman is on the right bank and would not be very practical, especially in winter.

Hi Carol

Take a look at Geneva English School. It is in my opinion the best primary school in the area.

Thank you. I had already seen their website and I really liked it. It seems quaint. Unfortunately the company only pays for certain schools and Geneva English School is not one of them.

If we do get accepted at the UN campus of Ecolint, we may have to consider living on the right bank. How is it like living nearby to the UN? Would it be too transient and not at all reflective of local culture?

thanks!!

Stay away from College du Leman!

I'd say int school geneva (nations branch) is imo the best. I did my IB from there.
