The airport is very close to the city center, but an expensive cab ride.
You can take the train from the airport to the city center for about 4 chf which only takes about seven minutes and runs regularly.

The closest place to live to the airport would probably be Grand or Petit Saconnex, but worldtodd is right - trains go from the city center allllllll the time, and it's the easiest way to get back and forth between the two places.
