Holiday / Vacation Ideas for Singles?

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced a one or two week holiday as a single person, and if so, where did you go, what did you do, and what would you advise?

Beach destinations with activities - ideas welcomed.

Feel free to list the do's and don't's as well.

you mean places to go by yourself, or with friends who are all single and have the possibility of meeting other singles?

I would recommend avoiding anywhere that is recognised as a "resort" as they are generally full of couples and families and you'll spend the whole time feeling like a one-legged man at an arse-kicking contest.

Away from resorts, travelling alone forces you to engage with people so it's a lot more fun and interesting than being in a couple or group.

I can recommend pretty much all of South East Asia: it's interesting, fun, cheap and you have quite a big choice of beaches.  The naturally sociable nature of most countries in the area also means that they actively try to include you in things because travelling alone seems like an odd novelty to them.

Good luck!

Charlie, I have already travelled on my own, 2 times 2 weeks each time. As long as you stick to busy places, with lots of things to do, then it's a great experience and it does allow you to meet a lot of nice people.

i agree with Andy, avoid "resorts" where it's stuffed with couples or any other places where you would get bored if on your own after 2h...

there's club med holidays that can be done too, you've got loads of activities to do during the day and people mix quite well although make sure to pick the adults only ones, as they tend to be the singles clubs- the others you'll get families with kids which will be less fun. you get to meet loads of people through those. otherwise you can maybe try a sport holiday? i did a wakeboard camp on my own in portugal last year and had a great time plus ended up meeting some crazy alcoholic latvians & estonians. we got on like a house on fire :)

Among the many places I have visited on my own are Los Angeles & N.Y., Caracas, Tunisia (x 2), Morocco (x 3), Crete, Cyprus (x 3), Spain (x2), France, Hong Kong (x 2), Singapore (x 4) and Sydney.

Among my group travels, I can quote, the USSR, Romania (x 2),  the former Czechoslavia, Lebanon, Jordan, the Holy Land (x2), Syria, and Iran – but I avoid group arrangements with a go-go-go programme.  I  opt for  comfortable but reasonably priced hotels with  a swimming-pool and some evening entertainment in a district where there are restaurants and other amenities nearby.

And as Denisa says, you can meet up with compatiblefolk for the duration of your holiday as well as others with whom you stay in touch for quite some time afterwards.

However, I always take plenty of reading material, just in case.  And I ask the hotel reception staff for tips on where to go and what to see, and then check their suggestions and prices with local travel agents.

One word of warning: avoid the high season and school holiday periods, especially in the autumn – retirees trying vainly to keep their darling grnadchildren in check.

Hope this helps, and happy hols,

R.

I also forgot to mention that there are agencies in the UK that specialize in group travel for singles with and without an in situ programme.

Friendship Travel is one such.  Haven’t used it myself but have heard good reports of its service.
