How far must a person drive to escape the clouds
I visited Geneva for the first time last week on a planning trip. I was there for six days and I saw the sun for about sixty seconds one day while I was in Lausanne. For the rest of the trip it was thick cloud cover.

Do you get to see the sun in Geneva during the winter? If so how often and how much better is it in the summer? How long is the cloudy season in the winter?

When it is cloudy, how far and in which direction must one drive to escape the cloud cover and experience the sunshine? I did notice plenty of sunshine was experienced on the ski trips organized by glocals members.

well, you've seen the worst of the weather so you'll be mentally prepared. summers are definitely sunnier and pleasant, but depends on the summer. There've been some cold/rainy summers in recent past.

I find Lausanne tends to be sunnier than Geneva, but if it's not grey and covered with low lying clouds, there tends to be a constant haze throughout the year so you don't see crystal clear blue skies as often as you'd like to.

Here's how I'd sum it up:

Hazy skies:

mer de nuage (ie ur below the puffy things)

and then days when you have sunny blue skies.. Priceless:

Thank you for your posts. I found them helpful.

Youmeco, thank you for posting those pictures. You gave me an interesting perspective of the clouds above Geneva and much desired sunny version of Geneva.

When I was flying into Geneva the clouds over the entire area looked like snow from above. I didn't realize until we had descended much further that it was cloud cover. The picture you posted of the cloud cover that I now found out has its own nickname was nice.

I also truly appreciated the river view on a sunny day even though it was hazy.

I guess some better designed questions might be in order. How far reaching is that cloud cover that seems to be over the whole lake area and more? After flying out of Geneva I was able to see the "end" of the clouds dissolving into sunny green lands. It seemed that the mountains form almost a huge circle around the lake area, is that correct? For future reference, does anyone know if Basel has cloud cover all winter, and does Zurich have cloud cover for extended periods of time in the winter?

Thank you Whovian for your clarification on the cloud cover, but I am not sure that I am familiar with the escalade story. Please elaborate.
