How to Debate: What is the Problem with Quoting Sources?

I  can understand shutting down a debate due to insults, or because it has veered off course. I fail to understand why citing evidence (however copious) to support an argument is a reason.

Discuss.  Or not....Wink

How about a thread on "Can we threat to use legal action to limit free speach of non leftist?"

Moderators, what do you think about that?

"Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls.
Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
And makes me poor indeed."

Although I did appreciate the explanation of the Dutch that you provided for what we in the US term yarmulke. Of course the literal translation into English sounds particularly harsh.

Another term I have heard in Europe is "red Indian" in reference to what we call Native Americans.  Many Europeans look at me strangely when I explained that the members of the various nations do not describe themselves as such.

Of course, there is a famous US football team called the Redskins,  located in  Washington, D.C.  And somewhere in America there was a group of Indians who named their basketball team, the Fighting Whities, and had t-shirts printed with that name...

I think with 'tensions' in the debate as they are coffee/tea might be preferable to alcohol.  But then again we might get so drunk we slur our words, don't understand each other and get tired leading to a peaceful resolution of the 'conflict'.  I'm torn trying to decide on the better option.  How about Irish coffee?

I am in full agreement.  This is a Forum where people discuss and provide information to illustrate what they are talking about or to defend their opinion as in other fora on your favorite movie or what are you listening to etc.  There is no "competition" for the most references/sources, but just a willingness and generosity on the part of ALL (without exception) participants on all sides to share some resources.  As I said to Nir, I defend Jacob B's right to vigorously defend his positions in whatever written/visual form that he wishes short of something serious like death threats.  They are only words and we shouldn't be afraid of them.

Now on the other hand if the thread about Egypt was giving glocals a bad image vis a vis advertisers then I would understand a financial rationale to stop the thread (not claiming this is the case btw) as I wouldn't like to see glocals or the Forum section to be shut down.

Obviously I misread Translators "can" to be 'can't' and I disagree with that point for the reason stated in my previous post.  My mistake and my correction.

@Mark: As a fellow webmaster I have to point out that the direction that the debate was taking could have had "Glocals" shut down by their host.

Most hosts have fairly strict terms and conditions - covering racism, insults, etc... This is simply because they will not be taking to court over the content of the sites they host. Likewise Glocals have the right to shuit down, censor or delete posts or members that they feel are putting the site in danger.

Also remember that while your name and information is not shared with non members - THE POSTS ARE PUBLIC.

I would have been very uncomfortable about the debates direction had it been as public on one of my sites.

As for quoting - Yes you must back your claims, I learnt  alot during that last debate and while it started to go too far off topic it was an interesting debate.

BUT please we all have something to learn from each other by repectful debating and when it becomes slanging matches it puts users off and ruins it for everyone else.

I think the main thing to ask yourself before you hit "Post" - Is are you being repectful to the other members of the site?

However I would like to clarify something while I am posting, to Jacob - I really did not understand much of the post (219) -

"We get this link from a poster who is of the opinion that Tariq Ramadan (cought redhanded on tape promoting the Iran regime on the death sentence of gays)".

Opinon of what? - I am not being rude, aggressive, or condesending just looking for you to end the sentence.

"To the non european Posters:

The term "joodcapje" is a very normal word in the Netherlands and in Germany there would be something very simular. Translated in English it means "jewcap" "

I am very european (UK and Spain) and I must say that at face value "jewcap" sounds a little offensive to me as a Englishman and of course English is my native language.

However I am sure that Translator would agree with myself that it was lost in translation and that we can see you didn't meant to offend anyone with the phrase "Jewcap". However the fault lies with you for assuming that the translation was fine, I will remember in future that you english is not Perfect.

As for the other question - I was curious as you have frequently used "left" as a way of stating the quote has no value and in previous posts you have used this phrase:

"Funny how liberals index their friends by race, as an attest to their color/ethnic blindness!"

So refering to you as "Right Wing" seemed obvious and no insult - However for the record I am not a "Lefty" or "Liberal" I don't need the tag. I believe in getting to know someone before judging them based only on their sexual preference, religous views, nationality or skin colour. I base my opinon on there actions and what they stand for, not "Lefty" viewpoints.

As for "Right Wing" this is the normal ENGLISH definition of somebody who is right wing -

"In politicsRightright-wing and rightist are generally used to describe support for preserving traditional social orders and hierarchies."

The full text can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_politics

(I know I love wikipedia) Under this definition the MB is "Right Wing".

The question was:

"I also have to ask why you, as an openly right wing man, are fixated on gay rights."

The reason for my question was because "Right Wing" supporters don't averagely concern themselves that much with gay rights.

"Right-wing supporters of "family values" generally oppose abortioneuthanasiahomosexuality, and adultery" - same article as before.

Sorry Jacob I meant to add this before posting, I shold read my own suggestions: The question also had this attached

"I also have to ask why you, as an openly right wing man, are fixated on gay rights.

There is with out doubt a vast ammount of human rights abused in the Arabic world, not just Gay rights. Womens rights I would say are right up there, religous and racial oppression are the ones that spring to mind firstly."

Cheers

Yeah, you are, you denying doesnt make it so.

Chris: In politicsRightright-wing and rightist are generally used to describe support for preserving traditional social orders and hierarchies

Well it used to be that way (up to 1920-1930) untill the socialist took over the liberal movement, and then the "old liberals" started calling themselves libertarians.  You know,..., those filthy RIGHT WING extreemist that abolished slavery in 1833 (England, PM Earl Gray) and 1863 (US,)

Your liberal friends (Democrats) on the othe hand are the party of 3 'S''s,

Slavery , Sesession, Socialism

But I never called myself "right" or "right wing", your  one dimensional world view is the blame, no wait,..., thats not it, I piss you off because I dont want to be your pet and give you an excuse,  so you can show how much of a  bleeding heart liberal you are and care for the disenfranchised.

Chris: So refering to you as "Right Wing" seemed obvious and no insult -

New speak, : by the way,..,I kind of have experience how liberals treat/view people of color.  And this indexing by race (as you are referring to that subject)  is repulsive and derogitory.

About "tradition", I am very progressive,..., I support the crazy NEW idea that citizens can rule themselves, threat of force should be outlawed, and that gays dont need to ask for tolerance from YOUR or ANYBODY to lead their life as they see fit.

Chris:I am very european (UK and Spain)

Chris :"I also have to ask why you, as an openly right wing man, are fixated on gay rights."

J Christ man, the discussion evolved around Tariq Ramadam who defended the death sentence in Iran for GAY people.  Memory retention problem?

Hello Jacob,

How do you know that Tariq Ramadam has defended the death sentence in Iran for Gay people? I have search a little bit in the Internet, and I have found the following answer about Gay people:

"The Islamic teaching as a whole, as do all the monotheistic religions, prohibits homosexuality and does not promote it. It is perceived as against the Divine project for human beings. Now it must be clear that Muslims cannot condemn the people with no understanding: It is important for Muslims to be able to say "I disagree with what you are doing and respect who you are." This is the way towards mutual tolerance and this is the way Muslims should act in their daily life. To be a gay does not prevent someone from being a Muslim: I know Muslims who aregay. Some are deeply suffering, others are doubting themselves and others are claiming their right to be so. It is important, once again not to condemn the beings while we may disapprove the behaviour or the acts. This is the way to respect each other, to remain both open and faithful to one’s belief." http://www.tariqramadan.com/Islam-the-West.html

Cheers
