How to apply for a UK passport for a new baby born in Switzerland?

Hi there,

I was just wondering if anyone could help me understand how we apply for a newborn passport for a baby born in Geneva to UK parents. We'd love to know how to do it AND how long it takes. Our baby not due until later this year but we want to go home to the UK for Christmas but this is passport speed dependent.

I saw a post about this previously but it was from back in 2009 so i wondered if things had changed!

Any advice welcomed!

Katie

You apply here:

https://passportapplication.service.gov.uk/ips-olc/

I went through this recently and mine took around three weeks; the problem with the one for a new baby is that you will need a countersignatory to the photo of your child. For this a)make sure it is someone who will be able to respond to any queries quickly and b) try to get someone to countersign whose passport was issued in the UK by the UK so that they dont need to ask any questions.  If you get a countersignatory who is British but whose passport was issued outside of the UK that will delay things as the UK needs to validate that person as well.

With the backlog at the moment, for which the Home Office has apologised [with some red faces] expect up to six weeks, although hopefully by the time your baby arrives, it will have improved somewhat. Good luck anyway, with the birth and with the passport.Wink

I have just found the link remembering the delay in processing applications.

This is what happens when you close the various regional overseas offices.

I would suggest that you obtain all the documentation as soon as possible and also ensure that the counter-signatory is going to be around when the baby arrives, so that the forms and photos can be signed and dispatched to the UK as soon as ever possible.

Also, despite the Home Office apologies and assurances that the delays will be absorbed, you should probably count on a minimum wait of three weeks before receiving the passport plus a possible 7-10 days more for good measure -- just in case.

I hope this won’t affect your plans to go home for Christmas and/or New Year, so fingers crossed and all the very best to everyone concerned,
