How to apply for a UK passport for a newborn?
I'm looking for any advice/ info on the process to obtain a passport for someone born in Geneva to two UK passport holders. (ie UK Domicile but swiss resident).

I understand that historically this was possible at the consulate, but that this is no longer the case.

Does anyone have any experience on doing this? In particular how long it takes?

Any/ all info would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance,

Simon

Hi - The passport application now needs to be sent to the Paris British Embassy. The website is http://ukinfrance.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/how-to-apply which contains all the form you need to download and fill in and also advises what you need to send with the passport application.
I am currently in the process of renewing my childs passport so I don't know how long it takes BUT on the application form it does ask when you will be travelling so they have an idea of how urgent the application is. Hope this helps.

I was employed at the Zuerich British Consulate many years ago: sadly due to stringent cost-cutting, the office was closed and we all lost our jobs. Nevertheless, we sent passport applications to the Geneva office on a daily basis. Since then, the Geneva office also no longer deals with passport applications and the previous posters have told you correctly in that you now have to apply via Paris. You can download the necessary forms. However, if I were you, I would definitely send these registered, as well as enclosing a registered envelope [large enough for a normal sized passport] for the return [think it does stipulate this on the instructions]. If you need any more help, please send another message. It depends upon their workload how quickly one receives the completed passport - generally speaking a week to 10 working days should suffice.

Hi - Yes I sent my application registered post but it also tells you to print off another form which will return the passport by TNT *This is also the form for your credit card details in order to pay for the passport! so you do not need to enclose any envelopes with the app for the return. Although you are charged 21 euros for the passport to be sent back to you.........

if the child was born in Geneva it should have Switzerland birth certificate, do they need any other documents prior to the passport application or the parents details are sufficient?

Hi - For the first passport you need to complete form C2. Here is the link to the notes on completing the form http://centralcontent.fco.gov.uk/resources/en/pdf/2890942/form-c2-notes. It states that you need to provide the childs birth certificate and any other forms you need to send. Which I believe is just 2 passport photos but check the notes to be sure. On the form you have to fill in both parents details including details of their british passports. Hope this helps but you should find all the info on the website

As a point of interest, my daughter was refused a British Passport in 1988, on the grounds that
she was '3rd generation born outside Britain. despite both her father and her grandfather
having held a british passport all their lives..
Fancy that..
