How to make the world a better place?
Hello! I am a big fan of Noam Chomsky and want to 'do something' to make the world a better place. My main principles are based on the moral teachings of Jesus Christ (though i cannot find evidence to believe in any form of divinity), the peaceful dissidence of martin luther king and the intelligence of noam chomsky. For example...I would like to find other poeple who feel that the treaty of lisbon is dangerous as it further concentrates power in the hands of a relatively tiny number of people.  I also feel the treaty is based on greed instead of the principles of decency and love which we all naturally express around friends and family but, frustratingly, do not find in society at large. What do you think? I will probably join a charity organisation (just as i had done in my native country) as these groups come closest to fullfilling my concerns. but often they are not political enough. i feel like a bit of a nut putting up this post but i also believe one person can do very little on his/her own. only by listening to others and forming a consensus of roughly like-minded poeple can anything be changed (eg, dr. king - mass movement to end slavery , ghandi - mass movement for independance, mandela - mass movement for freedom).

i'm not anti-european or anything (as anti treaty people are often called). i just think that the swiss bilateral agreements are a much better and more respectful form of policy making than directives which reduce the already flimsy democratic power of soverign peoples.

i hesitated for a long time to put up this post as i respect the fact glocals is not a political website. this will be the first and last post i put up on this topic. i thank anyone in advance who takes the time to read this and please understand no offence was meant to anyone who may take a different view.

I wont respond to comments on the thread in order to avoid creating a long trail of posts which could perhaps offend anyone due to their possible political content. but if anyone wants to send me a message of course i'll respond to that. thank you for your time.

Nah, man: you're right. Glocals is not a political site but, I think, broadly speaking and correct me if I'm wrong, a 'community website'. One targeted at people with extremely diverse backgrounds and there must be so much knowledge out there. There were a few dullard threads last year about what was and was not appropriate fodder for the forums. I have always thought it was a shame that the diversity of the community wasn't exploited. You know... to actually talk about something meaningful (maybe we could learn something?) So to me your post seems entirely appropriate where it is. And personally I reckon the forums could do with a bit of a scrap.

On the surface, you seem a bit like me. Not anti-European out of any kind of overriding principle. I mean... I'm totally pro-collaboration, just don't really see the point in centralising, removing the right to make decisions from the people with the information and experience necessary to make them. But I can't see really what you're getting at.

So, er, yeah. I'm kind of interested in knowing more about what you're getting at. Actually I think you should post on the thread: explain what your major gripe is; tell the ignorant (like me) what's up with Lisbon; what are charity organisation actually doing in this respect? But, of course, as you wish. Or drop me a message if you want.

I don't think you should feel that you sound like a nut for what you posted for this thread. You certainly shouldn't feel that what you posted would offend people. I will respond to one part of your post and create more potential to offend someone. Here goes:

Dr. King was not involved in the abolition of slavery nor was he even born when slavery was abolished. Slavery was abolished by the US government a long time before MLK was born.

I am not a site adminstrator, but I think that being a swiss centered site with a large membership in Geneva would pretty much be an open invitation for political discussion. The UN offices, employees and extended family of organizations dominate the Geneva population and it would seem that somewhere amongst all of those people someone would be interested in politically minded discussions. I think it is more of a sin that you posted comments that would spark questions, debate, and interest without any desire to converse about what your opinions are.

Based on the average of topics of interest under Glocal profiles, one can notice that international politics and other “serious issues” usually come third, right after ski and salsa.

I believe that says enough that Glocal members are also interested in some more serous stuff. (when they don’t ski or dance, of course) ;)
