I miss...
Ok folks, other than the obvious (that which are friends, family, the warmth that almost all other cultures have 'cept for the swiss etc.)...what do you miss from back home?

List home first then what you miss...i'll begin the game:

Puertorico:

 1. Being able to buy and eat lechon, rice and beans on the side of the high/freeway at 9am
 2. Paying $ .50 for a damn good cup of coffee with hot milk
 3. The sounds of the crickets and coqui's at night

New York:

 1. Drunk dials (giving and receiving)
 2. Dive bars
 3. Free pizza with ever beer you buy or free shots for each PBR you buy specials
 4. Being able to order just about anything at anytime of the day or night and get free delivery all the while not spending more than just $ 5.00 on food
 5. Ordering delivery when in a drunken stupor or as a hangover meal

Coming from Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada I miss:

1. Shops being open until 9pm from Monday to Saturday.

2. Waking up to frost in June (I'm not a fan of summers or heat!!)

3. Being near the ocean (mountain caustrophobia)

4. Being able to buy a toaster for $15CHF, a manual espresso machine for $50CHF and an iron for $20CHF. Why on earth are appliances so expensive here?!?!

5. The lack of people! It's nearly impossible to be alone here in public places, which is a bit stressful when you come from The Maritimes :P

LOL, good call on the BBQ sauce Kirsty...i love dipping my fries in it too.  The sauce tastes so different here, sad!

Another i'd like to add from NY:  Finding just about any bare necessities at the $ .99 store.  From hangers, to food, toiletries, party supplies, appliances (ie: toaster ovens and coffee machines for $5).  This is something needed in the burbs of switzerland.

Oh my heart just skipped a beat....Dollar Store, how I miss you so!

Here's what I miss (from Montreal)

-Poutine

-Things being open on Sundays

-Being able to go out all hours

-Pitchers of beer (and for no more than $10!)

-Poutine

-Taxis at fairly reasonable prices

-Going out with $30 in my pocket and being able to have dinner, drink all night and maybe even leave with a few bucks

-Finding any type of food, any time of day, and not have to pay a small ransom

-American style PIZZA (I get were close to Italy but someone needs to start making some decent slices around here!)

-Oh and did I mention POUTINE (my heart aches :crying: )

Aww, dollar stores! Dollarama, Great Canadian Dollar Store, A Buck or Two, Dollar Daze... my wallet hurts with longing :P

Poutine is impossible to make at home for some reason :( A steaming hot, gooey, dripping poutine and a "Beaver Tail" with jam and chocolate sauce for dessert *drool*

(I think the drooling is my tastebuds crying)

Mmmmmmmm.....beaver tail *sigh*

I have a stockpile of poutine gravy but the problem is the cheese, they don't have anything that is similar and so I have to substitute with other cheeses. I've done lots of experimenting but nothing is quite the same.

What a nice topic!

I grew up in Israel.

I miss (except for family):

 • the sea
 • the food (give me a simple Israeli salad anyday over all the haur cuisine in the world...(-:
 • understanding the language on the street
 • knowing that every service you need, someone will deliver for you if there's a buck in it
 • Having sales people in the stores who are actually dying to make a sell

I don't want to take creative liberty with the topic subject and also details what I don't miss, but that would make an interesting list too...:)

Jess, good call on the smoking one! Even if I don't touch alcohol I go home feeling dizzy and dehydrated from all the smoking.

Things I don't miss about Sydney, Nova Scotia:

- The drug dealers, drug houses, drug related crime and worrying daily about my house being broken into by some hopped up 13 year old with a rifle.

- The hidden or hushed up racism/discrimination and the fake political correctness.

- The poverty.

- The general attitude of the people. Some are depressed, some are delusional and some are stuck in the 1920's.

- The isolation. Google Map the town and consider that the nearest Starbucks is a 4.5-5 hour drive away in Halifax ;) I love the countryside, but I like civilization to be close too!

Things I always miss about Scotland:

1. Scottish banter. Irreplaceable tremendous chat, not found anywhere else in the world.

2. The elation that accompanies a rare sunny day, and the gratitude of everyone in Glasgow when they actually get to spend the day sitting in the park. And Loch Lomond.

3. Clubs with evil techno that makes you feel like you might just be sweating out some of your brain.

4. Reasonably priced, world-class whisky after dinner

5. Haggis, black pudding, vintage cheddar and occasionally, Irn-Bru.

Things I don't miss:

1. Wee bawbags whose raison d'etre is to pick fights with people and prove what a big man they are by randomly stabbing people in the street.

2. The weather.

That's about it really.

Okay, totally agree with all the other posts in regards to Canada & the US so here's a few more things I miss that weren't previously written.

Canada

1. Dairy Queen blizzards on a hot summer's day.
2. Licorice - the real stuff not the candy (nor the bark)
3. Canadian beer and Mike's Hard Lemonade
4. Drive through banking
5.And yes, occassionally I do miss Tim Horton's coffee and a doughnut!

USA

1. Whole Foods
2. Good ole 'street meat'
3. Hominy and creamed corn
4.TGIF potato skins & chicken wings
5. Cheap tickets for cinema, concerts etc.

And, one thing I don't miss is shovelling waist-high snow!

Yes - hot dogs, bratwursts, sausages, etc. :) Toronto has a decent street meat scene too, but down east we've got more french fries for sale... street spuds?

Hey this looks fun! Can I play too? It's been 22 years but -

As an explanted Southern girl, I miss:

1) children all over the place (too many old people here, must be the water...)

2) playing ball (football, baseball, volleyball) or croquet in the yard until it's too dark to see.

3) Wearing dresses and shorts most of the year (I do get tired of seeing girls in jeans and black trousers for EVERY occasion).

4) Porches, porch swings, porch conversations and romances, ah porches.

5) Seafood gumbo with LOTS of okrah and a killer dose of McAvery's Tabasco. Oh and buttered grits and New Orleans Puddin'.

6) Peach cobbler, banana puddin' and real pralines

7) The Gulf of Mexico, boats, rainstorms, hot sun and dolphins

8) Calling people by their titles, such as Sir, Ma'am, Brother, Sister, Mamma 'n Daddy and having children say "Yes Ma'am" to me and me having to say "Yes Ma'am" to older women.

9) Other titles for your friends: "Honey" "Darlin" "Sugah" or Sugah Pie" "Angel" "Baby-Doll", "Baby-Girl" (yes these are all grown-ups). But you'll also get this if you arrive for the first time in the Mobile, Alabama airport - people LIKE each other in the South.

I reckon I forgot to mention those things best left behind:

1) racism and hypocrisy

2) mosquitos

3) zealous protestants who think all Catholics are evil saint worshipers and resent all the fun we have.

4) double standards for women (in every aspect of life)

5) watermelon (never COULD get to liking that big green fruit and seems like I saw it at every picnic...)

Marmark,

For me, you'll always be 'Sugah', whether we're in GVA or in Alabama...so keep smiling, Baby-Doll.

And 2 real questions, cos your replies got me curioujs:

1. You mention people in the south call others by their titles, such as Brother & Sister. So do people really refer to their siblings by 'Bother' and 'Sister', and not by the sib's real name?

2. You mention there's 'double standards towards women' and 'hypocracy' in the south. What do you mean, and do you feel there's more of those 2 things in the south than in other places?

Thanks mate, for teaching me new things!

Alright Baby Doll:

As far as siblings go, you don't do it all the time, but it's perfectly normal to say, Brother come over here a moment, or Sister would you tie my shoe? All my cousins are called Cousin Chris, Cousin Miranda, etc., sometimes to their face but ALWAYS when referring to them.

Double standards: Lots of parents don't want their daughters to work or to own a car, worried that they will become either too independant or too promiscuous. So that means, when she is asked out on a date by a guy, he drives the car, pays for the meal and of course expects to be paid back in affection. And since he is driving the car, he is the boss of where they go and when she gets back home.....

When girls get pregnant, they are completed ostracized from society and often too ashamed to carry on with school. The guy, even though he is known to be the daddy, carries on with his education as if nothing ever happened.

I think this has to do with religion, which is typically used as a controlling mechanism for men to use on woman and children (as is now coming out in the media).

If the South would decrease the religion and increase the education, things would change.

I Miss

UK (Devon Specific)

1) The Sea ..

2) Pasties ..

3) Tescos 24 hours a day with the choice of more than 2 flavours of crisps (Paprika & Plain are not enough)

4) Being able to speak at my normal speed and with a strong accent ..

5) Walking on Dartmoor to a country pub with a beer garden, with real ale not the fizzy stuff they sell here.

I don't miss

1) Litter in the streets

2) Public transport

3) The one style fits all mentality to clothing being worn.. "No you are the wrong size/shape/age to wear that , just because your smaller/younger friend does"

4) Having to be careful in a bar for looking the wrong way at someone.

5) The weather .. Why does it rain every day?
I Miss

1) The Sea ..

2) Pasties ..

3) Tescos 24 hours a day with the choice of more than 2 flavours of crisps (Paprika & Plain are not enough)

4) Being able to speak at my normal speed and with a strong accent ..

5) Walking on Dartmoor to a country pub with a beer garden, with real ale not the fizzy stuff they sell here.
Cheers Trev, you have just made me incredibly homesick! ;-)

joining in late ... (I know) but I love the thread :) /Here's what I miss of home (italy)

The Sea, the rocks, the sand and the beaches

The Coffee. Good, Cheap, Strong coffee. And being able to go to any bar in the morning, and get a cornetto e cappuccino, or an espresso and get always a good one!!

The weather and the sun

The ICE CREAM (and not that pseudo italian ice cream you get here)

The 'struscio' (walking alone the docks and the old town on hot and humid sunday afternoons and saturday eveinng, with nothing else to do the walk, eat ice cream and greet the people you meet)

The shops! Cool, Trendy, Not-looking-like-a-clone, CHEAP clothes

Flea Markets

The Scooter!

Knowing all your neuighbours and popping by with sweets for Xmas, Easter etc

The people - nice warm and friendly

Cannoli (and other Sicilian sweets)

Chianti! and Wine from Tuscany in general (for 2euros the bottle!!)

The family (enlarged family)

Speaking dialect (both Sicilian and from Tuscany)

Town celebration (like the festivals for the Saint of the town or other religious/historycal celebrations) - most of all San.Ranieri and the Luminara and the SO engaging "Gioco del Ponte!!"

What I don't miss:

The mentality of people, so closed at times

Gossip being the city hobby (in Sicily) - everyone knows everything about everyone!

Hypocrisis (not sure about the spelling)

The 'I heard nothing, seen nothing, said nothing' unwritten rule

Tons of turist in "Piazza dei Miracoli' to take photos of the leaning tower (blocking the way for us normal civilians)

Being 'different' just because i am not 100% italian

The current political situation

And last .. the mosquitos :)

From Ghana:

I miss:

cheap tropical fruit (coconuts, mangoes, pineapple, watermelon, etc)

food: yams, plantain, spinach stew with palm oil...

sunshine and warm weather

being able to get anything repaired cheaply instead of throwing it out (shoes, clothing, electronics, etc.

I don't miss:

how religious everyone is, and how I had to pretend to like church and fight to stay awake

traffic! it takes ridiculously long to get anywhere in the city

reckless taxi drivers - no regard for human life whatsoever

having to go to internet cafés

From Massachusetts, US:

I miss:

Trader Joe's and Whole Foods

Vegan restaurants in Northampton

Ebay and Amazon (the selection and prices available here are not comparable)

How much cheaper everything is, and how often things are discounted (and by how much!)

24/7 Stop and Shop supermarket / grocery store

I don't miss:

No sidewalks; not friendly to pedestrians

Take me to your tropical fruit, oceanic dream places!

Memory jogged a bit by Trevor...I miss Monster Munch and talking ten to the dozen and being understood on all levels. Cheekiness. And the weather. Yes! Yes, I am English, but I don't remember it so constantly grey and showery as it is here.... True, memories are highly selective (thankfully!). But the elated buuuzzzz in the air when clothes are seasonal and sparse, and spirits are high as people spill out of the buildings and congregate all over the place (no minding sipping beers as cars zoom by... blissfully ignorant of more calmer cafes of the traffic-free squares of the continents...), pint in hand and full of animated talk is hard to beat. And I miss the same kind of spirited buzzzz during the festive, festive season...

From Rome, Italy:

I miss:

- The big house in which I used to live in Rome, with a lot of other people.

- cappuccino e cornetto at the bar at the corner, where the barman always knows you, even if it's just the 2nd time you go there

- the small restaurant that nobody knows, that serves you pasta alla carbonara (without cream), facioli co le cotiche, porchetta, fave col pecorino, vino della casa, caffè, ammazzacaffè...all of this for 7 Euro

- 24/7 bars

- wandering around the town all night long

- Eating La Sorchetta (a special croissant, served only at night) at 3AM

- 24/7 buses, and the feeling that you can come home at any time of the night

- seeing the sun rise while getting home after a night spent wandering all around the town

I don't miss:

- traffic jams at every hour of the day

- incredibly crowded public transports

- underpaid jobs

- high taxes and bad services

- cars parked everywhere

- bad news on newspaper (at lest two every day)

- long queues at the post office

- the pope appearing on TV three times a day

- useless political talks

- the hate people has against every new idea (and against the ones who carry new ideas)

- being sure that none of these things will improve in the next 10 years

From Northern Virginia:

fireflies in summer

stores that are open Sundays and into the evenings

Doughnuts, real ones not boules de Berlin or Starbucks

good live music a la Iota

cheap craft supplies and sewing notions

drive in movies

front porches

cheap beer

good bars (though hopefully, when the Clubhouse opens this weekend that will be a thing of the past)

i grew up here, so i'll go with Japan for my list!

I miss (in no specific order):

- real karaoke

- temples

- being able to send a parcel at 2am because you don't have time during the day

- trains

- semi (they're like cicadas, but they have the most amazing song)

- the humid heat

- kurobuta hirekatsu (it's a pork dish)

- Osanbashi (a pier in Yokohama)

- Sakurajima (active volcano in Kagoshima)

- the toy department in Takashimaya (a store), because let's face it, that was my all-time 2nd favourite place to be as a child.

my favourite place in Japan? that's a real tough one... i'll narrow it down to just one city, how's that? Yokohama.

trains in CH are nothing like trains in Japan...and i never take any. i use the bus a lot. but the Japanese trains have a rhythm to them, when you're in them. i know it sounds crazy, but nothing beats that. and there's a great PA system announcing the trains, etc, and again, although they're just saying 'in a few moments, the express to ... will arrive on platform ...', i grew up hearing that without understanding the individual words, so i guess that's why it has an impact on me... i know, i'm weird. :P

as for the best Japanese in town... don't really know as i don't really go, mostly cos the restaurants here are expensive and i'm picky. i've been to the one behind the HCR, which was pretty good. otherwise, i just get myself some take-away sushi at Mikado, which is really good value for not-bad sushi.
