IT/Computer repair help?

Hello! I have an HP laptop (about 4 years old) and I think I need to have the fan replaced. It overheats and shuts itself off, but no error messages. Does anyone know of a cheap computer repair shop (or is there an IT person who wants to earn a few bucks or a beer on the side). I think this is a pretty easy fix, but I suspect that if I take it into a shop, it will end up costing more than the computer is worth!

Thanks!

what is it that shuts off ? just the fan or the entire pc shuts down?

if it's just the fan, that's normal. it is controlled by a temperature setting in the bios. it shuts down when the cpu chip has been cooled down enough. i have elevated my laptop off the table from the back approximately  one inch to keep the airflow free.

Thanks, I've been trying to elevate the back, but it's a little unwieldy if it's not on an entirely flat surface. To be honest, given its age, I'm not surprised it could use a new fan. Any idea where to get one?

Hi,

You probably will find a fan there : http://www.prodimex.ch/ but I don't know if they will do the job. Otherwise you can come to the computer free help meeting by Zonker each Monday (in principle) at 12:00 at the Starbucks close to the main train station (Cornavin).

This might help you

http://www.ehow.com/how_4557146_replace-fan-hp-laptop.html

Once you have the fan in hands you can try to clean it or go to http://www.1000ordi.ch/ and check with them if they have or can deliver

if I were you I would give it a try Smile

@chandra what kind of computer is it? can you tell me the make/model? in some cases, it's enough to clean out the fan/vent but in some cases, i've had to replace the fan. bring it on monday and I can have a look. if it's more urgent than that, feel free to contact me.

@ Zonker, I thought maybe I could clean out the fan myself, but alas, the whole casing seems to need to be removed and I'm skittish about it. I couldn't make it yesterday and next Monday's no good. Maybe the following week (if the thing doesn't melt first)? Thx.

@chandra whenever you can come, i'll be there. But, I would be careful about overusing it when it overheats. Not to sound too dire, but the worst-case scenario for overheating is if the mechanism to regulate temperature fails and then the system is literally fried.

Let's meet another time (during your lunch break or after work?) to have a quick look. It could be worth it.

In the meantime, make sure you use the computer on a flat surface with no table cloth or other material which might hinder the flow of air. Don't set it on your lap or on your bed or anything similar. Make sure the vent(s) on the side of the system are sufficiently clear as well.

PM me if you have more questions.
