I'm a bad poker player
I had a poker party with some friends tonight... low-key, music on, everyone friendly - a very nice way to play. We played tournament-style, so everyone buys in for the same amount of money at the start, plays until they don't have any chips left, and the last three (out of 10 this time) take home some cash.

I made it into the final two, and my killer instinct completely deserted me. My friend who was still in it with me is an au pair, and can use the money more than I can. She's been as regular as anyone in these once-every-month-or-two games, but is moving back to the US in a week and I kind of thought it would be nice if she could finish on a good note. And, honestly, I find the game a lot more exciting with a few more people playing. By the time we get down to two, I'm ready to move on.

So I didn't really throw it, but I started betting heavily on hands that were not very good, not folding when I knew I should. My chips were gone pretty quickly, and I feel pretty good about it. I guess I won't be one of those guys playing on TV any time soon... lol.

Does that ever happen to you? You're in the position where you can really close in for the kill (in sports, in business...) and you just think, "what's the point?". I'm not sure about the nice guys finishing last business, but I kind of think that "nice guy finishing second" is a pretty good compromise.

Hello... I'd love to say I understand fully, that it also happen to me a lot... but actually, I can't!
I'd say it probably depends on your character, and your right, it might be the same for sports, business, etc. I'm in a working environement that his usually quite "competitive and result's oriented", and I always tried to achieve good results, in comparaison to other's one, or my old. Same for sports, I can't imagine playing tennis or something like that without counting the points. And for poker too, of course. I love heads up (when you're only 2), btw.
I'm not sure if it's always a quality (by exemple, we've many card and board games at home, and I usually win to all of them, not very cool for my girlfriend, and not even for me, as I play for the win, and lack some challenge), and we can't really say one type of character is better than another (I'd not be the most suited guy to work in a social thing, but I find it great some have the abilities).
At least, in your game, everyone was happy, the girl who might need the money won, you had a good night and finish second, so all's fine :)

it happens to me too. And I hope I don't sound too 'always doign the right thing' kind of wimp, but I think that with me personally it's mostly linked to a feeling of 'playing it fair'.

When I feel I am doing something fair for both sides, I usually feel good about closing the deal, or beating them at a hand, etc. But I feel I am offering someone a bad deal, or I feel I am playing friendly poker and my friend needs the money more than me, then the 'why do it' mechanism kicks in big time.

i think I would do what you did in the poker game.

. . . If I had won Poker Night with any kind of hint that it may have been charity. Life is one thing, but Poker is another! Ha Ha - Michele

P.S. If playing poker is about the money, one shouldn't be playing poker to begin with. It should be about the game, and there is a fair amount of pride in outplaying your poker buddies without charity.

because usually, if it's not the case, people play awfull, go to showdown in all hands, make crappy all-ins,...
Of course you're right, people should not play something too important to them, but winning something nice makes people play better.
But the problems are in situation like the one described above, when winning is more important for one than the other. And there, you better have to be a gamer...

I've tried playing without using money to help new people learn the game, and you're absolutely right: they just go crazy. Any other game you can play just for fun, but for poker, if there's no money it goes downhill very quickly. That reminds me of something else, actually... time for a new thread, though.

Please contact me if you have another game.  I am from the US and I play quite a bit back home.  I would also be looking for a group to got to Bern and play in the ccasino sometimes.  Home games are a great place to hone your poker skills before trying to play inthe casino.

Thanks,

Kirk

My name is Afonso and I have recently moved to Geneva (1 month).  I am looking for a friendly home poker game just like the one you described.  I am from Brazil, moved to the US with the company and now I have relocated to Geneva also with the same company.

Sounds like a nice game you have there.  If you have a seat available, I would love to be part of a group here.  Back home in the US we had a similar type, nice people, music, friendly atmosphere, just to have fun for a buy-in that does not hurt anyone.

Thanks and please let me know.

Afonso
