Importing a car from Switzerland to France

Hi

Can anyone help?  We are thinking of moving from central Geneva out to France.  We bought a new car in January and it has done about 9000km since then.  Does anyone know how much it would cost to import it to France?

Thanks

Laura

Hi Laura,

good news: you don't have to pay anything. Because:

- your car belongs to you since more than 6 months AND

- you take your car over the border because you move to France.

So when you cross the border you simply have to state the car on the list of all the items you are brining with you at the moment you enter France.

Afterwards you have to register your car at a prefecture/sous-prefecture to get the French "Carte grise". This is only possible when you show a proof that your car is not registered in CH anymore (no plates anymore). The proof is called "radiation des sceaux". And - if I remember well - you need a paper "Certificat de conformité" (homologation) in order to get your new French Carte grise. Of course you will have to pay an administration fee (sth. like 60 EUR).

Also good for you: you don't need a technical control because your car is less than 5 years old.

You go with your Carte grise to the next garage (Speedy, etc.) and ask them to give you the plates. - They take the Carte grise and make the plates within 10 min.

All you need then is an insurance.

That's it. If you are lucky and have all the papers, you can do it all in half a day.
