Importing new kitchen into Switzerland

I realise that one has to pay the VAT on goods imported into Switzerland. But, is there more to pay such as import duties when new kitchen is transported into Switzerland by a lorry/van?!

Thanks for your advice in advance, SEAn

Depending upon the country borders involved, you might have to pay for export and import duties somewhere in the 50 to 100 EUR range. That's separate from the Swiss VAT of course, which you'll pay on the value of the goods + shipment cost. I know this since my company imports furniture into Switzerland. Cheers.

You can probably argue this at the border when you bring the Van, and the reciepts etc... but recently I shipped some tools in from France and the customs re-valued the goods to fit Swiss prices and charged me Admin. Hopefully they won't do anything like that to you! And good luck.

You can detax it and then you have to pay 8% VAT at the border but that should be it. I am having a kitchen delivered soon and I wasn't asked for any extra costs other than the 8%.

Dear All,

Thanks very much to all of you who took the time to provide your input.

If I understand correctly, apart from paying the 8% swiss VAT (while benefitting from a return of 19% German VAT), I might have to pay a negligible fee towards importing a new kitchen into Switzerland from Germany for private use. It might be good to reach an agreement on the costs with the company from whom I buy the kitchen in advance since they'll be facing all the questions at the border!
