I am not an specialist. It looks to me like a wasp and it is probably not poisonous. HOWEVER, if you make an ALLEGIC reaction, it could be very dangerous. Go to a doctor or hospital where you can show the sting (take the beast with you) or Visit your closest pharmacy and ask for advice there. Hope it will not be serious for you.

I also got stung on Saturday afternoon, but immediately rubbed in some anti-histamine cream, which worked at the time. However today whilst digging in our garden, the sting flared up again and the top of my fingers went numb. So added more liberal doses of anti-histamine cream and it has settled down again. Horrible, and very painful eh?

Bitten... probably not. Stung... which means venom. And yes, painful. Certainly a wasp.

A have a friend who was both bitten by a viper and stung by a hornet (not the same day). The hornet venom affected him more...

Just read:

Use Vinegar - Wasp and hornet venom are powerful alkalines. Use an acid such as vinegar to neutralize them. It can be applied via a piece of cloth or bandaging. Make sure to keep the stings soaked for at least 15 minutes. Some vinegar will absorb through the skin, and it should greatly help eliminate the discomfort.

And ice for the swelling...

Just learned another thing:

If you got stung by a bee, don't use vinegar: contrarily to the wasps their venom is acidic. Use baking soda instead to neutralize the acid.

Thanks everyone for your feedback/suggestions.  Not sure if a wasp or hornet but although painful doesn't seem to have done any real damage.  Cheers.
