Insurance for Car with U.S. Plates

Dear Neighbors--

I'm new to the area and my car with U.S. plates will be arriving in Geneva tomorrow.  After a week of searching, it appears to be the case that Swiss insurance companies will NOT provide third-party (responsabilite civil) insurance for a car with U.S. plates.  I can't get Swiss plates without getting an inspection, which requires driving the car, which I can't do without insurance. So I feel completely trapped.  Could someone with experience importing a car with non-EU plates please help!  If you could call me by phone, that would be best: 0767039337.  I've truly run out of options so deeply appreciate any help you could offer.

Best,Greg

Hi Greg,

my experience (importing a car from Italy) is that when you go trough the customs (zoll) they give you some forms and a "zoll number"; with these forms and number you can go to any insuranse, that will insure your car for a short period, provided you will bring it to the inspection in some weeks (and that you subscribe the insurance with them ;-) ...)

I hope this helps !

Ciaociao

Greg: Try Italsure.  Their customer service is beyond horrible but they will insure a car on US plates.

If you start a policy with them, be sure to specify that you WILL pursue local registration and that you need a Switzerland-based policy.  This will get you a local policy originated through Chartis.

Come to think of it, you might consider contacting Chartis in Zurich directly and cut out the middle-man.  The Chartis guy seems OK; it's Italsure that can't seem to pick up the damn phone...
