Dear all,
What kind of insurance is required if you want to give birth in a private hospital of Geneva?
Thank you very much!

Private Insurance in Switzerland is either "Demi Privee" or "Privee" Assurance. (it really only relates to the beds in a room and the level of doctor that will see you immediately.- Demi Privee meaning you get two beds per room, and privee meaning you get one bed/patient per room.)
With Demi Privee a Doctor/Gyno is guaranteed to be at childbirth (plus 1 or 2 midwives) and frankly here you don't need any more than that.
If you have "Demi-Privee" already as your insurance, just call your insurance company and ask them which hospitals you can use.
For example "The Hopital de la Tour" is fantastic, and demi privee will get you a double room, or even single room if youre lucky and its like a 4 star hotel.
I think you can upgrade your insurance as well...if youre already pregnant.

You generally have to have Swiss health insurance for 12 months before you can ask for semi-private or private for childbirth.
So if you are already pregnant and just signing up for health insurance, you'll have to get the basic option - delivery at HUG Maternite (although they also only have 2 beds per room anyway).

I can only add the the public hospitals offer great level of service here for mums to be and babies. As they are the best prepared for handling any difficult cases it makes sense to give birth there just in case.
The only downside is sharing a room. It did not bothered me much and when I gave bith in Nyon hospital I actually had a room just for myself as they had enough rooms and not many patients. So if you are lucky you get it for free.

Your newborn baby will be covered by the compulsory health insurance if he's sick (healthy-baby care is included in the mother's insurance). As any person living in Switzerand, the baby will need his own health insurance withing 3 months of birth (and the insurance covers everything 3 months retrospectively). You can contact your health insurance before the birth to set up the contract, but you will only start paying the fees from the day of birth.

I have another question regarding the same topic. How is the following risk usually covered: the baby is born with health problems and needs to remain in the hospital longer than the mother.Ana, our family is expecting a baby girl end of September. To be sure she would be covered as of day 1, I contacted our insurance company and signed the documents they sent me. I will send those back tomorrow.
As for your Q1, when I had my first daughter, I had signed up and Paid for private (1 bed per room) . But when birth did happen, there were no private rooms and we ended up in a room with another person, though I was still paying for private! At the Hopital de Morges, it was 6 years ago 100.-CHF per night extra.

Swiss Hopitals have good service compared to other countries.
If you have the budget semi private is good enough, though for giving birth
it needs to be in force 12 months before hand.
Hope that helps.
