International adoption whilst living in Switzerland

Hi

I wondered if anyone here has any information about trying to adopt whilst living in Switzerland?  We would like to adopt from overseas but we have no idea where to start.

Many thanks

Laura

Hi Laura,

First you need a Home Study report done by the canton of Geneva. They give you an authorisation to bring the adopted child into Switzerland. The process takes time, almost upto one year for the certificate, so start early. They will hold series of interviews with you and your partner (if applying together). There are a few social workers who speak English, but the final report will be in French. Contact details as under:

Evaluation des lieux de placement, Rue des Granges, 1204 Genève. T: 022 546 10 40. Email : [email protected], www.ge.ch/structures_accueil

They would charge a fee of chf 500 to start the process.

Then you need to approach an agency which does international adoption. It will depend where you want to adopt from, the authorisation will be for one country only. This in turn depends on your and your spouce's nationality. The agency should charge you something like chf 3000.

In some cantons, the agency also does the home study report.

Good Luck.
