Hey Amber ....
A guy's answer, and on top of that a wanna-be tech freak, careful ..... ;-P
So, there's a lot of GPS apps out there, even for Switzerland - SURPRISE !
What you wanna use it for mostly !? As a pedestrian ? Or as a GPS in your car ?
For the car solution: an excellent free app is called "nav free GPS". A lite version is available, and the full version is like 3 bucks or so. If you add another 3 bucks you get also the warning for the speeding camera warning. It can easily compete with full-scale car GPS systems like TomTom or so....
If you just want a pedestrian version - I'd go simply with google maps. Unless you wanna go offroad ? Hiking in the mountains without cell phone reception ? Then "motionX GPS" is your best bet. It can download maps from anywhyere in the world, and installed maps - well, no cell phone reception needed for "on the go download". It has functions that many $1000 navigation systems don't offer - I used it on lake Geneva for sailing during a night-regatta. It's awsome !
Obviously - with performance comes complexity, and you need to take time to learn to use it.
The problem with motionX GPS and navfree - and most likely with any good GPS app - it'll kill your IPhone 3's battery within 2 hours or so, and the processor of the old IPhone is way too slow, you'll be under the impression your phone froze because it'l take minutes to process any request or map update.
I hate it myself that youll always need to upgrade stuff, but IT industry is just like that. 2 years old - best throw it out.
The apps I named will work - but I doubt you'll enjoy using any :-(
Good luck, any more questions - let me know ;-P
