Is Tipping at Restaurants Required / Expected in Switzerland?

Hi glocals,

Even though I've been here a few years, I'm still not sure what the 'common' custom here is regarding tipping at restaurants.

I know that waiters are paid a salary here, but do they also expect to be tipped?

And if yes - what percentage should the tip be?

Thanks a lot

It's not mandatory - a lot of people just round up on a smaller bill (+/- a franc) and give a little bit more (normally not over 5-7%) on a larger bill.

My rule of thumb is much the same as Matthew’s.

And for a coffee of coffee but nothing more, I give 10 centimes if the service has been pleasant.

I find staff tend to remember me even if I don’t go back to the place for a week or two, so I imagine the small gesture has some bearing.

Thanks for the replies :-)

If the service is terrible (which it often is) I won't tip, and if the service is amazing I'll overtip.

My question is more re the 'normal' times when the service is decent.
So according to Matthew, 5%-7% should be OK.

Makes sense.

Thanks again,

Oded
