You have not touched on the very basic  question - does he/she speak French?

If he/she is German speaking only, I would suggest Bern because without the language you would be a bit blocked.

The language is an issue, indeed. She does speak some French and currently takes a course but she's not yet fluent...

The job situation is quite good, although it depends on the specialty. University hospitals are sometimes (not always) a bit more difficult to get in and usually they like having people who have had some experience before (for gynecology this might be some general surgery or gynecology in a smaller hospital).

Fluent French is definitely required.

Your friend should check out www.fmh.ch -> Weiterbildung. There you can find the programmes for the different specialties and all the hospitals that are recognized.

If your friend already is a specialist, then her German diploma will be recognized here and she could also try private clinics (very much depends on the type of activity she wants to do - surgery, obstetrics etc).
