Yesterday I went to L'incontro, an italian restaurant next to the Stand tram stop. One friend of mine asked for a lasagna and I agreed to share a pizza with another friend.
When we made our order the waiter said that they don't have pizza for two. Well, we thought that maybe it was a misunderstanding and that he was refering to the size of the pizza.
Later, when a smiley waiter brought the pizza, I explained the situation very clearly: "The pizza is to big for me, and I am not very hungry. Is it possible to bring another plate for my friend?". The smile suddenly changed into a dispesible regard "Non, non on fait pas ?a, desol?!" was his solely answer.
In order to find a practical solution for the ackward embarassement we fond ourselves in, the solution was to eat the pizza with bare hands observed by the astonished and merciless waiters.
A restaurant tradition or pure ignorance? I don't have the answer and probably won't have, since I am not coming back.

Hi there
I think that sharing a pizza is not necessarily stingy. Many restaurants in Geneva serve pretty big one that most people can't finish, so sharing one means you still have room for dessert, so in the end you consume more.
I think the sharing of food is also a cultural thing. I have just spent 6 years in Asia where it is the norm for people to order many dishes and for every body to dig in. It offers a wider variety of food during one meal, a bit like a buffet. Now back here, I find myself frustrated with one plate for myself. May be it's just greedyness but it's nice to pick in many dishes...

if it's OK to share a pizza. If it isn't, then just leave and choose a more professional venue. Normally if you ask, it should not be a problem.. unless you have only an espresso or glass of water...
Remember, in GVA the very very vast majority of restaurants, snack and cafes are run by people that are NOT from the food & beverage industry. They struggle to survive over a semester. The concept of "welcoming a customer" is often foreign to them; how many times have you been formally ushered to your table? If none minds you a few seconds after you set foot in a place, just leave. They're too busy to serve you...
You want a good pizza and acceptable service? Go for Geneva classics: Da Paolo or Marino in Eaux-Vives, Harmonie on Rond-Point-de-Jonction. They've been around as long as the Cathedral... there must be a reason...

Yes, it's a great Pizza there and the waiters are very friendly. I love also, that they have a beautiful and romantic garden (if the wheather is ok) and a big non smoker area. Really good place, but, sorry Lara, there is even a better pizza in Commugny (Restaurant-Motel "Le L?man" Pizzas au feu de bois cuisine italienne, T?l. 022 776 25 21, Rte de Gen?ve 11
1291 Commugny http://www.motel-le-leman.ch, and they are really friendly too. It's also cheaper and better wines, but mostly overbooked, so you need a reservation. Sharing pizza possible, even without salad...and the daily housemade TIRAMISU is a dream!!! Only desadvantage: There are no public transports to get there. So you need a car, scooter or bike.

L Incontro is well known for its good pasta but also for being very unfriendly with customers! Especially if you don't know the owner!!!! 10 years ago I had a bad experience there..... very unfriendly people that's right! They don't care about service because it's full all the time!
PS: in nyon we have another great place to eat pizza QUAI 23 in front of the lake!

My tip for eating pizza in Eaux Vives is Cinecitta - I like their pizzas more than Da Paolo, and they usually have a smile for me. They are on Rue 31 Decembre.
If anyone out there lives in Petit Saconnex, then the Fontana di Trevi is excellent, and the staff there are friendly. They are more than happy to do the one-pizza-one-salad shared thing too!

I've already shared a pizza with my boyfriend at the pizzaria ForuMeyrin...
And it's delicious!
But I know that usually they don't allow us to share plates at the restaurants... wich I don't agree!
I think it's so "small" to think like that... anyway, that's Geneva! Have to get used to that! ://
