Any information on living in Ferney with young children and commuting by bus or car to Nations would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of people work at the UN and commute there from Ferney. Information on public transportation routes and times is available at http://www.tpg.ch.
The F bus in particular regularly goes to and from Ferney and the Palais des Nations. Public transportation service is less frequent very early in the mornings, late in the evenings, and on weekends.

You are probably referring to taking them to school in the morning and going to work...?
There's the F bus everyday although, like everywhere else, you will have to bear in mind rush hours between 7.45am - 8.15ish then again in the evening from 6pm.
There are less buses in the afternoon and same at weekends.
Then by car, you also reach Nations within 10 minutes, approx the same by bus (or probably 15 min). As Ferney is near Palexpo, the traffic can get very busy in the morning when there is a big event such as SIHH or Geneva Motor show, etc.
