Living in Geneva without speaking French
Hello there,

You live in Geneva and you already faced some difficulties because your French is not so good? You are not alone:) I was in your place 3 years ago when I came to Geneva without speaking a word in French. Now I am doing a research for my University course to find out how people manage to survive in this city without speaking the local language. I invite you to participate in my research by filling in this questionnaire. It is confidential and anonymous. Thank you very much for your time and attention :)

Hello! :)

I would like to thank every one who responded to my invitation to fill in the questionnaire for my research. The first result is 22 responses during a day :) Which was a nice surprise for me - I see that I am doing something useful and may be the results of my research will somehow improve the situation. Who knows? I am just a student in French, but my teachers are really interested in the topic and so far this topic has not been developed yet.

Your opinion matters and your contribution is valuable. Thanks again and I will keep you informed and I will post my "report" about my research on line when it is ready.

Have a wonderful day!

Natalia

Done. If you happen to know a French tutor that you could recommend, I would be super grateful.

Thanks.

Hello there!

A little update:) The number of the answers is growing: 36 already :) And what is interesting, locals and French speakers are also interested to know how it works- life without speaking the local language.

I hope to present my results soon. Thanks to all of you who showed interest to this topic.

Have a wonderful day!

Completed!

You might struggle a bit with the open ended questions to come to definite conclusions, but I would encourage you to take this further and break down the open ended questions into specific questions.

I think a good understanding of this problem on a scientific basis will be an absolute powerful knowledge base to help others and also start a consulting business.

It is interesting that I am meeting plenty of illegal Genevians who has been here up to 10 years, surviving very well and still don't speak the language.

A very clever businessman and highly qualified scientist said to me French is not an absolute requirement as at the top end of business English is universal.

French, I feel, is a requirement at social level and will surely make live easy.

I come from South Africa and we have 11 official languages and then quite a few more communities with specific languages and dialects.

But English is fast becoming Africa's communal language and I cant really understand why that cant be so in Europe.

We respect each others cultural heritage and language, but out of necessity have adopted English as a language that can help us move forward in difficult times.

I think Europe will prosper greatly if they also make such a decision, more so Geneva as Geneva contributes I believe up to 35% of Swiss GDP?

By the massive amount of Multinationals settling here and Geneva being ranked as the 3rd best city to live in worldwide I think its time to put language barriers issues aside.

I don't care how long it takes, I will learn French!

Hello!

Thank you very much for your reply to the topic:) I agree that the open ended questions will give me a lot of work for analysis, but like this I will get some unexpected answers I could not think about. This is already the case:). I will think though about some modifications, as you are completely right, the multiple choice questions are easier both for the person who makes a research and for people who fill in the questionnaire.

Do you think that English could become the 5th language of Switserland de jure as it is de facto (well, I have heard this opinion already, at least about Geneva)?

Hello!

I did not have a chance to thank you and other people who have responded to the topic of the forum sooner because of the exam preparation. So I am doing it now :).

A little brake to give some rest to nerves and brain and then I will start to work at the research. The last statistics I saw was 55 responses! It's a lot. Plus I have some on paper (about 20) ... It is progressing and getting more and more interesting thanks to you guys :) :)

I would like to thank you for your opinion posted on-line: it was interesting and challenging. Thanks a lot!

Have a nice evening and talk to you later!

Natalia

Hi,

Quite frankly, English should be the first language as I am indirectly involved with the UN and WHO and English is standard even though translation is available. Its the same for all the international corporations that are here. I think the French are in the minority, or close to in Geneva.:) Its also not patriotic to not speak German.;)

But as I said, I respect Switzerland as my adopted country and I am the guest here. I can speak German and French is next then Italian, why not! The Swiss way is the best way, always was, always will be.

Do a search on Google scholar for ways to set up questionaires.

I use Surveymonky.com. The give a free service at a basic level and also have great information as to how to get the best out of survey. It is sort of an art nowadays as all marketing revolves around customer information and surveys.

Good luck and as I said, this could be the start of a great business!
