London - Any tips? Ideas?
I am heading to London for a few days. Any tips? Ideas?

Things that are overrated? Hidden gems? Things not to miss?

I've been there once, but for 2 days so I didn't get a chance to see much.

Toooo big a question. So forgive the verbal diarrhoea and hopefully some of these will stick. I'm assuming you know all the tourist headlines so wont bother to state the bleeding obvious 'Piccadilly/Mayfair/Comedy Store/London Eye/Vist the Queen/..blah blah blah':

(have a look at www.streetmap.co.uk for any streets i mention)

most unexpedly amazing building: British Museum www.britishmuseum.org. Okay, its got 'stuff' in it but the building itself is worth a look. Plus it has the old circular domed reading room in the centre

Also if you are into museums the Tate Modern on the southbank at Southwark usually has something inane; its a converted power station so the sense of space is amazing in the main entrance hall. Plus the millennium bridge is in front of it and you get good views of St Paul's.

unknown pub for a summers evening: The Mayflower (Rotherhithe)

http://www.pubs.com/pub_details.cfm?ID=209

Completely off the beaten track, about ten minutes in a taxi from the city along the river east on the suth side; its where a little bit of history began but more importnatly has a lovely rickety old jetty to sit on the river and watch the world wash by. Genuinely good food also.

surprisingly good restaurant if you are prepared to step outside your comfort zone:

Boisdale's near Victoria, a Scottish restaurant that i always try to get to whenever I go back. Best haggis, neeps and tatties with a noggin of whisky lovingly poured over the lot. Lovely building in a funny part of town, great food if quite pricey.

http://www.boisdale.co.uk/belgravia/

If you are around the embankment area have a look at the old Law court buildings in the 'temple' area; they date back to the year 0. they are located basically between the Old Bailey on Fleet Street and the riverside at Embankment. Lots of old bars around there too if you like to see men in wigs smoking pipes.

in Covent Garden, a cheap pizza place with lunch deals called Fire & Stone on Maiden lane - I think you can have a good pizza there for about £5 which is rare for Covt Garden...

Shepherd's market in Mayfair in between Picadilly/Green Park and Berkeley Square. the original red light district of Mayfair and now a small little cluster of cosy bars and restaurants in the evenings. Also just off Berkeley Square is the Guinea Pub on Bruton Place http://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub1039.html great steak sandwiches... Plus there's Nobu if you fancy people watching.

Ah i'm on a roll now... its just a matter of time till I mention the good old days...

I'm sure i'll think of loads more but thats the first that came into my mind...

The best time I can find between London and Leeds is 2h08 minutes from Kings Cross. I recommend Leeds.

Aisde from everything that's been mentioned, there are city tours from Sandmans, you can buy well-priced theatre tickets in Leichester Square (in the West End), and Ive always wanted to take a boat into Greenwich, although Im not exatly such what Id find there.  And remember that everything is closed on Sundays except for churches and pubs - what will you do ;)

I love London though, have a great time!

Love the south bank, dinner at Gabriel's wharf (Gourmet Pizza place or the Oxo Tower great with a view but can be pricey).

If you're there during Wimbledon during the week might be fun to check out some tennis. Queuing in the morning can be quite an experience - not always good depends on the weather and day.

Not sure if anyone mentioned the markets (other then Borough) Portabello, Spitalfields, Camden markets all lots of fun.

@ JMfromTO : I got bad luck picking up a food poisoning while eating the fish and chips there. The fish had a strange taste, and the oil also, but being hungry, I went on eating.

I had a horrible night of throwing up every 5 minutes, 2 days of fever, and 3 years of stomach trouble due to my stomach that got ulcers thanks to that. It was a very bad poisonning, and we didn't treat it in time (I was 14, and my mother didn't want to bring me to hospital).

It took time for the doctor to find the right medicine, and why it came back all the time. It was because of pain killers I took when I had period, it used to irritate the scars in my stomach. Gastritis and oesophagitis, all thanks to fish and chips at a stall in the London Zoo...
