In February, my 80 year old father is moving here for up to 6-months. A retired clinical psychologist, peace activist, quaker, philosophy fan, jazz buff and acoustic guitar player, he's an interesting person with a great sense of humor and outlook on life. He's in ''pretty good shape for an old man'' as he puts it - mobile, can take care of his basic needs, but if left to his own devices would forget to take his meds regulary & eat peaches and shredded wheat all day, every day (and likely be happy as a clam too).
I have a budget of about 3000 CHF/month for his lodging & some kind of care - ideally an hour or a few hours a day, checking up on him, helping him with his laundry, making sure he's got food in the fridge and is eating balanced meals, taking him to regular check-ups at the doctors. Or maybe a network of people I can introduce him to - barbershop quartet groups, chess playing, jungian psychology buffs...
I'm looking for assistance to help with this task - ideally in the area where I'll find places for him - I'm looking near me - UN/Servette/Grottes. I'm 26 years old, C-permit holder with full time-job near the UN living in Geneva for over 16 years now.
As the plan for his stay is developing, I am not yet sure what I am searching for - it may be finding someone to check up on him and paid an hourly rate - but I'd like to find someone who would enjoy his company above all - and who would approach it as an interesting 6-month mitch-albomesque experience as well. It may be people to put him in touch with - activities he can join / volunteering / etc.
So, if have any ideas or thoughts on this situation to share - contact me! We've never been very traditional, so I'm open to non-traditional ideas for how to make his stay work and enjoyable.
Sara
