Looking for jobs - the eternal quest

Hi All,

I have seen some posts on this in the past, but I figured I would bring it up again.... What strategies have you all used to find positions here in Geneva and the surrounding area.  I am a marketing manager currently working for an agency in Paris.  I really love my job, but the travel back and forth from Geneva to Paris has gotten really too much so I am looking for a position in the area.  I have applied online to positions, and provided my work information to some of the recruitment agencies.  The thing is, I find this process so impersonal and I am looking for a way to get some more one-on-one time with HR managers/agencies.  I have an EU work permit, but not the Swiss residency, so I have been told it can be complex, but considering you all are expats as well - I know I am asking the right group for their advice!! Any help would be appreciated :).

Three MUSTS-TO-HAVE keys when searching for your job

1.prepare a good CV highlighting your experience and education without unexplaned periods of inactivity and ask yourself how to reach potential employers more efficiently with your new resumé;

2.practice the brainstorming for your own sake future ideal job and list on a piece of paper what is immediate job you hunt for and the one shortly after(promotion may be?) AND make separately a list of many employers you might know using such skills of yours;

3.explore the open market and keep in mind your search so far is not over as you need to search as well on the HIDDEN market, using internet may be and your networks (LinkedIN?). After all now is the time you implement for yourself services you are selling in your present occupation.

Two freebies: Consider contacting a coach and look at the feasibility in a not so distant future to managing your own business...

Good luck.We all think positive for you.

Thanks so much for your response!! The frustrating thing is I do have my ducks in a row as far as my CV, my vision for employment & my online network (although I suppose I could be more agressive on Linked In), but I think I really lack a professional network in Geneva which makes it difficult to get my foot in the door.  I'm still trying though - never say die ;).

Thanks again and big LOL on running my own business.... that's just lovely :)

First of all if you already have a job that you love, be thankful you have it.  Unfortunately due to the financial crisis in Europe, a lot of people, especially young people in their 20's, seem to want to move to Switzerland to find a job because they can't find it in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal...etc....  So it is very competitive, and you should not be surprised if it takes a year or more to find something, especially if you are looking in Geneva.

What I would recommend is to utilize Linkedin and build your network.  Emplazise on your language skills and current experience.  It is true that companies in Switzerland are giving priority to those who already have a Swiss residence permit, and then EU citizens.  If you have skills that are not easy to find in Switzerland then you have an advantage.

Good luck!
