Macbook air vs Macbook vs Macbook pro

Hi, we are thinking of getting our daughter a phone and a laptop for her 13th birthday. She needs it for school and so on.

Would you recommend a normal Macbook or air or pro.

And for a phone, iPhone 8 or iPhone X?

I would say Macbook Air as a first laptop. I used to have Pro and it was very heavy. Air doesnt have a CD entrance but much lighter/slimmer. Its important if she needs to carry it around. I am very happy with my choice now and won't go back to Pro anymore.

Just as an aside, Macs are generaly pretty hopeless at playing games so if your teenager is hoping to play games now or in the future, especially online with friends, then you might want to err towards a windows pc.

As far as macs go, frankly the mac air is looking a bit old these days.  I don't think it has had a major update since 2015 so it probably isnt as future proof and I think you can only find it in 13 inch versions which may be too small.  The macbook was given a pretty good update last year and has more flexibility, better hardware so likely to stand the test of time longer.  I would avood the pro for a 13 yr old, its really expensive and probably specced beyond anything she will need at school.

Having had all three at one time or another, I would suggest the Air. It has enough power for most use cases, it weighs about as much as a Harry Potter hardcover (or whatever kids read these days), and the battery life is super competitive: up to 12 hours.

I'm using mine right now. It's also the only computer I use for work (application development and design; moderately demanding of the computer's memory) while traveling and I've never had an issue.

But... if it's for gaming, professional video-editing/animation, or multi track audio recording/mixing, then you need more power.
