Magical Mountain Triangle

On a hike in the region Basiliensis, we were talking about some mountains near Basel, which had the same name, Blauen and Belchen.

There are five mountains named Belchen, three in France, one in Germany and one in Switzerland which are all in viewing distance of each other.

These mountains are named after Belenus, the Celtic god of the sun.

But the connection is even stronger. 73 km east of the main mountain of the group, the French Belchen (Ballon d’Alsace in French) (1247 m), lies the German Belchen (1414 m). On both days of the equinox, the sun rises behind the German Belchen and of course from the German Belchen, the sun sets behind the French Belchen at the same two days.

On the day of the summer solstice, viewed from the Ballon D’Alsace, the sun rises behind the 27 km away Minor Belchen and on the winter solstice from the 88 km distant Swiss Belchen.

So on the French Belchen, the begin of the astronomical seasons can be observed.

If there is a connection with the mountains in the region named Blauen, is not that clear.

Disclaimer: There is nothing magical or supernatural about these mountains, just added that, to get more readers. Should have added kittens instead.
