Mobile Phone Networks

Hi everyone,

I'm from the UK and have been here just 2 weeks.  I am looking for a mobile phone network, where calls and texts to the UK would be relatively cheap.

From experience, can anyone recommend any of the providers.  I know that Orange have a deal with glocals, but I would like your comments.

Thanks :o)

Lebara prepaid, unless you plan on using data packets, while roaming (42 CHF/MB).

I am with MBudget on a prepay tariff, which is a Migros phone. Swisscom provide the network so the coverage is really good. Their prices seem pretty reasonable compared to some of the other providers. Texts and calls seem to be a flat rate around europe. The choice of handsets isn't fantastic.

I started with MBudget pay as you go and found the network and prices pretty good, just over 6 months ago I went on a contract with Orange as I needed an upgrade / e-mail on my phone etc. for work.

Since then I have had nothing but problems: the coverage in my flat is terrible (400m from Geneva train station), I constantly get messages saying I have missed calls and I have had extortionate roaming charges - 14chf / minute on one call!! The customer service is very bad too- I have complained several times but not been refunded the charges. Every bill comes to about double my monthly plan price (mostly due to roaming charges, I travel a few days per month)

After my 3rd complaint about the network Orange finally admitted there is a problem close to my home and agreed to release me from the contract with no cost. It is such a relief to be rid of them though I am waiting for the change back to MBudget now and won't believe it's the end of the problems until I have switched over and paid the final bill.

In short- if you are deciding which network you want please save yourself a lot of problems and avoid Orange. Swisscom / MBudget is great, I've heard decent reports about Sunrise too.

Also beware of Lebara / Lyca etc -the per minute rate is great but they charge a "call set-up fee" for each call- typically 28 cents so fine if you talk to someone abroad for an hour, not so good for a series of 20 second calls to other swiss phones.

Howdy...

I have muchomobile which is a good prepaid card if you're unsure of how long you'll be here...

Costs 0.19chf to a UK landline is you're call is 16 mins or less...bit annoying yes, as it's cheaper to hang up and dial back then stay on the call beyond 16 mins...but does work out quite cheap...you can pick up a sim card from the post office...I got mine at the airport...see link below...

Orange sucks hard.  I ferried an aircraft to Guinea Bissau and got better coverage there than I do in my apartment.

Does anyone else  have trouble with iphones here?

I used my iPhone for the week i was working in GVA, on the UK Three network (still negotiating my permy move to CH) .. I roamed with Orange, used it for a week of calls and data, mostly maps but some facebook and mail.. Only cost me an extra £6 on top of my usual monthly £15.

I'll be buying the new iPhone when it comes out i imagine and seriously thinking about just keeping my UK number and roaming, at least for a while.
