Motorway vignette

Anybody has good tips on how to easily remove the old vignette from the car's windshield?

Which solvent is best for this job?

Many thanks,
Avi

I heard they sell vignette removal kits at the post office and at petrol stations. Then i also heard that you can use white spirit or a hairdryer. Of course there is the other solution of having 5 different vignettes on the car like some people where i live :) Im getting the kit myself unless you manage to remove yours by Monday and tell us how you did it :)

Hi Avi,

Best solution that I have found and use if to use a hair dryer directly on the vignette for 1-2 minutes on high heat then scrap it off with a plastic knife or something like it that you have in the kitchen (will come off as more or less 3-4 pieces). Then do the clean up with a bit of alcohol or lighter fluid.

Other people just go to the Post Office and buy a kit that has a solution that removes the vignette. Can't remember the cost but I think CHF 8.

Hi Maria,

Just to let you know. It is officially ILLEGAL to have more than one vignette on the car (current year only). Have not heard of anyone being fined for it but it could happen.

As a reminder for others. If you are caught as of Feb. 1st on the highway, the new fine is CHF 200 + of course the CHF 40 for the vignette.

Really? I had no idea. There are loads of people where i live that do it. Once i saw a vignette from 06! Personally i wouldnt. It takes up much windshield space that could be used in other ways. Looking at the car in front of you for example :P

If you buy your new vignette at TCS in Rive, they give you a free "vignette remover" (a blade in a plastic handle), perfect for quick and easy removal. The same little thing can be purchased (kiosks? supermarkets?) for few Chf. Convenient and lasts forever (if forever exists).

i just read that they are not increasing the fine, from 100.- sfr!!

easiest way and trouble free to remove the vignette: break the windshield and have it replaced under the car insurance.  quick, no fuss with smelly removal fluids and no worries about burning out the hair dryer Sealed lol.

@epicure.

I checked Lematin and 24heures web sites and did not see anything about the fine staying at CHF 100. In fact the new CHF 200 amount seems to have been approved by the Federal Gov't last fall. What is your source on the change back to CHF 100?

I removed the Vignette with my thumb nail (not long at all) easily today. After reading this thread, it looks I might have just saved myself CHF 8! Smile

@wonder

Once you have broken off one of the pieces of vignette that is jammed under the nail and you are bleeding you will have a better appreciation of the "ease" of the hairdryer / removal kit options.

Glad you got lucky.

Switzerland_autoroute_sticker_2010Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) -

The Swiss federal government has issued a correction to Swiss media reports this week that said the fine for not having a 2010 autoroute sticker on your car have gone up. The fine remains CHF100, the government says. Parliament has been debating an increase, but if one goes into effect it will not be before 2011

I never thought of the day i might sound like a domestic goddess.  Always keep a pack of baby wipes at home; you can use them for soooo many things!!  You can get a pack of 80 for about 1 or 2 francs in the supermarkets.  peel off the sticker from your car windscreen and just rub the dregs with the baby wipe - all the little gluey bits stick to the wipe!

YES!  Forget hair driers, solvent and kits - just get a Stanley knife blade (new) and use that on its own without the knife.  Takes 10 seconds and also removes any stray glue underneath.  This tip was given to me by a Venetian shopkeeper and it works.

I used my Ice Scraper which got most of it off, then just used a mildly abrasive sponge to remove the small residue..

The least expensive way is to use a cloth dipped from time to time in warm/hot water. Keep rubbing at the old vignette as it peels off 'circle' by 'circle'. You need a little patience but eventually it all comes off and you would have saved yourself the trouble of buying a kit or having to mess with solvents. Worked well for us!

If WD40 works, than nail varnish remover will probably do too.

Yes but nail polish is an agressive solvent and might damage plastics or paintwork if accidentally spilt, WD40 does not to that to the trims or paint...
