Moving to Lausanne ... any ideas ?
Hi Glocals,

I have a question I was hoping someone could help me with.

I lived in GVA for 1.5 years and then moved to Gland for the last 6 mths to escape the rent trap, but now I'm starting to hate it actually since the guy downstairs smokes all the time and it somehow manages up in my room, plus he's got a really awful cough that doesn't respect my bedtime and I kinda miss living in a "normal" sized city.

Anyway, I was thinking of moving to Lausanne and wondering whether anyone had any advice on the best area to go to, places to avoid - that type of thing, or even any ideas of typical rent. Must be cheaper than Geneva, right?

So, any help anyone could kindly offer would be much appreciated to help me make an informed decision to help me escape the coughing, smoking man. Yeeuch!

Matt

Hey Matt,

Here4now already shared some good advice.

This Wednesday we're sending the weekly glocals' newsletter to all glocals members in Lausanne, and we'll include your question in it. So I hope by the end of the week, you'll get even more advice.

Actually, Renens is only dodgy around the train station (but where isn't?), Renens village is fine. And it's cheaper than Lausanne. Bit far out though!

I lived in Lausanne for the 3 1/2 years, first near the Palais de Beaulieu - nice area, but some apartments are fairly rundown, so be careful if you visit anything there (I only lasted six months there for that reason).

The part of Lausanne bordering on Pully is also nice (and fairly central), and rents haven't quite reached Pully levels!! My last apartment was managed by Rilsa, they were really helpful and did any repairs that needed to be done without any moaning and groaning. I can highly recommend checking with them to see if they have anything that might suit you. www.rilsa.ch, I'm afraid I've deleted their phone nunber  :-(

I lived in Pully last year. Loved it. The path along the lake is close by... ideal for morning run or walk - peaceful, serene and photogenic. The views of the Alps, the lake and French towns in the night are spectacular. Pully is also well connected by public transport. Conveniently close to the center and the Lausanne train station. Nearby vineyards, restaurants and friendly folks make it fun place to live.

If you commute to Geneve for work, and do not wish to suffer the peak hour driving, spots near the gare such as Ouchy or north of the gare may be good options. So are places between the center and EPFL. I really liked the fast and convenient connections from Lausanne to Geneve and the rest of Switzerland.

St.Francois and the Flon are the centers of Lausanne nightlife. This means that in these areas you can find people till late at night.

I live in the center since last year and I haven't been disturbed that much: the noises were loud only 2-3 times a year...le Carnaval de Lausanne, la fete de la musique, the Euro 2008. All the other days you hear some noises from people in the streets, but nothing so loud to keep you awake all night.
