Moving to the US - Banking issues

Could someone share his/her experience when a non swiss citizen is moving fm switzerland to US. I am being told that the swiss bank accounts needs to be closed as soon as one leaves and even a securites account cannot be maintained here.

Is there a bank in switzerland where one can still have an account, even when the person is residing in the US.

A friend of ours has just moved to Atlanta from geneva and hadnt closed her accounts so they froze her account and in order for her to access her own cash she has to send a letter asking them to transfer it to her USA bank account. The BCV said that they do not allow people to retain bank accounts when they move to america.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kate.

How long was you friend able to get in terms of time, before she had to move /transfer everything to her US account.

I am wondering how do I close the a/c unless I have a US account where I can tranfer the money into....and I can only open a US a/c once I am there and have the social security number.

Thanks

I'm sure you can explain that situation to BCV so that they keep your account open until you open your US bank account and wire transfer all your money.

If you are not a swiss citizen, you can also open a bank account in your country before moving to the US. I lived 10 years in Florida and I always kept my bank account in France, the only thing you have to do on the US side is declare your foreign bank account on your tax return each year.
