Musical chairs dinner
This Musical Chairs Dinner is for ages 25-35

Again ????? The last Musical Chairs Dinner was already for the same age group. In fact, as far as I remember, most of them if not all are restricted...

Yeah, it makes sense. I personaly prefer dinners that mix all age groups because it is more fun, interesting and closer to what a community is all about. I think it's grea to have the opportunity to connect with old and young alike, at the same party. But I can understand that some people would feel better amongst their own age group - especially the young folks.

I'll be there in May - Sounds lovely!

Thanks for organizing this !

Cheers,

MF

Come on guys, get off that high horse...:)

I join all the dinners to organise them. Even if it's a dinner for ages 60+, or for 10-20, I'll be there...

Some more food for thought:

One argument for having a 25-35 age limit that always comes up is the fact that this is the age of the majority of glocal members. I assume this refers to the +20000 registered members? Hang on guys, we all know very well that glocals doesn't have 20000 active members, i.e. people who join events, contribute to the forum, organize events, or live the glocals spirit...

The most active glocal members should actually be the ones who received a community Oscar during the last 2 years. Funny enough 9 of the 20 winners were over 35 ... and some of them even completely passed their 'sell by date' and are over 50 :w00t: So the average age of a glocal Oscar winner is 35.4, which means that the average Oscar winner can't join any of the latest MCDs ;)

What is also quite funny with this entire age discussion is the fact that you can change your age on glocals anytime to whatever you want. There are number of people who have a glocals age which has nothing to do with their real age. Maybe cause they are all referring to their 'felt age' rather than their 'lived age' ;)

So for those of you who desperately want to join the musical chairs dinner there is always the option to change your year of birth to 1974 :hehe:

However, the little rebel in me has another suggestion  : why don't we 'oldies' just all change our year of birth to 1938 (71 is as old as you can get on glocals) and screw up this infamous average glocals age calculation for once and all :satisfied:

very true, but you can easily change numbers, but not some people's prejudices. and here's the (good/bad) news, one day, the 35 yr. olds WILL be 60 (hopefully) and maybe that is the disturbing/annoying/discomforting reality and provokes some people's decision not to socialize with others out of their age range.

well..since it's only the old ones commenting.:D...i'll put in my two bit considering it's a gloomy sunday...

the last MCD have been restricted to age, but not only the MCD....the beginner's salsa weekend also....i was asked by many if i were attending since i love to dance...but i couldnt attend because of the age restriction....:w00t:

it still baffles me as to why glocals would restrict a dance class to age!  Martha Graham danced till her last days, and baryshnikov is still dancing!  It made me sad and I felt distrubed by it.. in any other country in the world...at least the ones i've been to....dance is one of the few art forms that bridges the gap between generations....and two people, young, old, tall, short, smelly or hairy share a passion to dance....

...as long as activites such as the GVA marathon group, W&T,s and the Birthday drinks (wouldn't that be ironic) don't restrict age ...

let's hope this nonsense will stop soon.....it would be nice to hear thoughts in the forums from the 25-39 group that attend age restricted actvites (besides tinkie :D) ...that way we don't sound like a bunch of whiners....

bon dimanche

i'm glad there is some interest in the no-show drinks. just don't say you weren't warned what would happen if you come!

also, i had to change the date because the one thing i hate more than crowds is football. but i suspect you all know that by now.

Divagirl, I completely agree with you: putting age restrictions on a dance course is ridiculous! I personally am not into salsa, but if I were I certainly wouldn't feel more comfortable if people around me belonged to the same age group as me when I tried to learn it!

To be honest, I much prefer being in an environment with a widespread age range. The atmosphere usually becomes more relaxed and the conversations get more interesting. I don't understand why I should automatically feel that I have more in common with someone just because we're the same age than someone who's 55, 23 or 70. It's whether we share the same interests and opinions or not that matters. I haven't gone to any of the musical chairs dinners, but if I did I would much prefer that there were no age restrictions. I'm sure I would have a much better time that way.

Someone once told me that 'it doesn't matter how much older or younger someone else is, what matters is that you live at the same time' (she had just lost her grandmother, who was also her best friend). I couldn't agree more.

Oh, and the dancing lady in this video (Swedish journalist and writer Anette Kullenberg), was born in January 1939 and is in other words.... yes, exactly, 70!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90J0fvF9zaQ

well, let me do a plug-in on this thread... as for my last big event, I expect ALL age groups who are old enough to legally enter a bar lounge area of a hotel (which technically is anyone as long as accompanied by an adult) to join me for the Final Birthday Drinks, my own birthday & Farewell gathering on March 19th.  Young and old, new or veteran are welcome!

But the best is if so many people are upset about not having an event that limits age groups, why not just organize one that's for all age group? Don't call it Musical Chair Dinner, but something else.  I can hook you up with some places happy to receive a group of 30-50 people for dinner, the divulge the Secret of My Success for organzing events (or better yet, Rasputin's got the process practically patented ;).  You just have to have the stomach, time and patience to track all those who say 'yes' but then followup with each and every one few days beforehand cuz people (believe it or not) forget, and even if you still have their committments, you nearly always get last minute cancellations.

I have not organized many events like a MCD where exact attendance is mandatory if you don't want to end up paying for the no-shows.  I won't go into the no-show issues, but I do give Nir thumbs up for organzing such big events. It certainly isn't easy.

Oh, btw, Nir, I wont be able to attnd my first and last chance at your MCD at the fab restaurant afterall, even though i didn't sign up... I've got an early flight next day for a chance meeting with a real Prince

Bon App everyone!

Question:

Is it really appropriate to have Glocal wide events restricted to certain categories of people? After all, there is "Global" in Glocals but not in "25-35"!!!

It's great to have 25- drinks, over 40 nights, girls only breakfasts, gay events, etc. but these are organized by individual members. If there are 70 people attending, I do not see where's the problem! If 80% of Glocalers are between 25 and 35, that means that only 14 of them are going to be out of range. How dreadful  Just put a sign on the table that says <35 and I'll stay away.

Some members only enjoy socializing with people in their own own age range? Fine, but it's their problem. If they they really feel unhappy, why don't they just organize something? And by the way, I too prefer to socialize with people of my own age group... So, when is the next 36 and above MCD?

Other question:

Have you ever thought of publicizing the list of people who register? Why?

Sounds like JulianT is discriminating against people with low moral standards here. They can't help it! Blame the parents or MTV. Or both.

At my events people with all different weaves of moral fibre are allowed. From a twisted single-strand to twill. And everyone between warp and weft. (That means high or low, to save the lazies from figuring out the metaphor.)

Also, I remember seeing an interview with Jarvis Cocker -- at least I think it was Jarvis Cocker -- when he said that nobody under the age of 30 should be allowed to make music. Of course, this may in part be because it took him two decades to get his music career off the ground... and despite being about 22 at the time and trying to 'do' music myself, something about it really resonated with me. I mean, the under-35s -- and to a greater extent the under-30s -- are kind of stupid, right?

Best to leave the age-segregation as it is. Leave the under-35s to calculating their exact fraction of the bill, reciting passages from Kerouac, never having an actual opinion, and generally scraping the bottom of the barrel for conversation.

I wasn't suggesting that somone would be outraged seeing double quotes. It supposed to be:

We received consistent feedback from participants in our previous Musical Chairs Dinners saying

that most of them (not all) most enjoy socializing with people from their own social background. So we decided to do some dinners for everybody, and other dinners juts for certain race.

Tinkie:

I was saying that if I saw sth like this(rephrased explanation, why the dinner is for 25-35 only): We received consistent feedback from participants in our previous Musical Chairs Dinners saying that most of them (not all) most enjoy socializing with people from their own social background. So we decided to do some dinners for everybody, and other dinners only for certain races I would be outraged.

On the other hand when I see 'girls only dinner' advert I'm not outraged at all, even though it's theoritically sexist.

Then you start thinking which of those are ok and which are not: 'girls only', '23-45 only', 'handsome only', 'smokers only', 'having-scar-on-the-left-cheek only' etc. etc.

The text you are quoting:

Totally agree with Free and Tinkie, this is what I would like to add.

I remember (despite my age) :w00t:  attending my first Musical Chair dinner back in 2006.

That was the real glocals spirit, all age groups, 23year olds sitting with 70 years old (LOL) and having a great time. I meet so many wonderful people and I was more than happy to recommend the musical chair dinners to anyone – and I admit it: I don’t do it any longer… and so maybe it’s time to think back, and start to show the real glocal spirit again – would be kind of nice…Swiss, dreaming about the good old times, after all I have time, being a pensioner has so many advantages… wonder how I manage to run with the Marathon group tonight, well that’s another chapter...getting a bit confused - blame on my age. :hehe:  ;)

I've been debating whether to add a post, as there isn't anything new that I could add that hasn't already been said.  But in the interest of supporting what has already said, I decided to post.  In fact, I was quite surprised that this debate had to be rehashed, as it seemed perfectly clear the last time the debate was launched that the next dinner would be for us "old fogeys".  A gesture that I appreciated even if it is unlikely I would ever attend (I never seem to manage to call the babysitter which makes going out a bit difficult ;))  My hats off to all of you who have been defending "our" rights :D

..it is true MF ...this is getting old....but I still have a few unanswered questions... for my own curiousity...

although I can appreciate a few here changing their age to 70 (something which this diva would never do :D), I don't think it's going to get anywhere, as we all know we can change our age to be whatever we want and no one will care.  I suppose the question now would be, are there any members that registered to this event outside the age-restriction of 25-35 (besides Nir of course :D)? and if so, how does glocals handle this part...do these members get accepted/rejected etc?

If there is a flexibility involved, then the age restriction means nothing....it just gives glocals the freedom of selection:w00t:....after all said in this email thread....as well as the reasons why there is a restriction, does it really matter?

If the answer is yes, then perhaps the lesson here is that we should just take our chances and sign up for age restricted events without acknowledging age, until we get away with it... :P:P...It just boils down to a question of principle....

any thoughts?

diva

Nir, no offense to you on this thread as I know how difficult it is to organise events and follow through.....but do not take this thread personal, as you know forums are meant for open discussions...

Diva,

Per your question:

 1. To my best knowledge, only people age 25-35 joined the coming Dinner.
 2. One person who is 45 joined, but then realised the average age will be 30, so wrote back to us to say she'll feel un-comfy at the dinner.

only  read this  thread now...and somehow I am still wondering where the high horse is running.....

maybe off to Mongolia already? or to the next Salsa event with a terrific, young, tanned, sexy latino boy?

anyway....as I am a baby spirit in an adult world, I do not (want to) understand...

Ever watched Sex in the City? or ever heard of age pyramid? ... should the future base be cut off ?

I understand youngsters who want to have their own party and I think when they organize their parties they will ...such as did the over 40ties.... however to post general events with age limitations by glocals....not sure I like that -such as salsa classes one of the best salsa women dancers I have ever seen in Geneva was over 60!

As the initiator of the Oscar idea, I suggest we are going to introduce this year the baby oscar with a pack of pampers ;)

My attendance to the next event not only depends on age of host, horse and other members but also on other criteria such as openness, fun, character, brains (not alzheimer - sorry guys-...), ...list to be extended ....

if I am not qualifying...I am sure that I am not gonna miss something so whatever... Peace and Love !

well, let me take this opportunity to make my plug in for my grand finale event:

My Final Monthly Birthday Drinks, and so happens to be my birthmonth & my very last event.  And I certainly hope ALL members old and young, veterans and newbies from near and far will join me for a grand finale, Sex & the City-style evening event. (folks from NY, Paris are evening joing the event!).

Have a look at my event posting for March 19th. You don't want to miss this one, where the view from this bar terrace over looking the lake is the best you could ask for in Geneva at no cover charge! :w00t:

The only thing I ask for is that all smokers smoke outside. That's been my only restrictions at my events.  So, hope to see you there!!  :D

I suspect that the upper limit of 39 was cunningly selected in order to frustrate the people on this thread: 40+ meeting people. Where to go?   However, you should really keep in mind that 99% of the Activities on glocals are organised by the members themselves, not by the site admins.
