National Research Programme 60 (NRP 60) – “Equality between men and women”

What everybody's thoughts on this?

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/swiss_news/Research_seeks_answer_to_gender_inequalities_.html?cid=29328920&rss=true

Myself after after a few years of what can only be called politically bad press for Switzerland (i.e. Minarets and the Expulsion of foreigners) consider this a great piece of news that shows that Switzerland can be a great intelligent country.

How many countries can honestly say they are equal? Personally I don't now of any, however I only have experience of 3, but I don't really believe either Spain or the UK handles equality issues any better.

The report outlined in the article goes even further and will look how female non EU migrants are treated in comparison to EU members.

Its not due until 2013 and so probably won't cause any change (if any) until 2015 but at least they are trying to deal with the problem - congrats Switzerland.

What do you think and what should they be including?

Personally I would like to see jobs being advertised with gender specification, I have to say this is where I as a male get discriminated against - and I am getting fed up with having to point out that I have have bigger boobs than my sister and having to offer to wear a skirt just to get the chance of a job.

Hah

Gender equality in Switzerland. I haven't seen it, someone else with different opinion? If I can recall right, it was early 80's when confederation declared women right to vote as universal. At my point of view, this country does things when it is last chance to do so.

Here women is supposed to stay home and keep family running, which I guess is why the research is being conducted. Stores close quite early for men to do shopping after a work day. Or what about laudry room in my last building where it was allowed to do so only from 9am to 6pm... Good to see some progress nevertheless residing still in middle ages when it comes to gender equality. Wink

"Appenzell Innerrhoden was the last canton to grant women the right to vote, doing so in 1990." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appenzell_Innerrhoden

Try out scandinavian countries when it comes to gender equality, as far as I understand it is place where you can find kind of gender equality from western world. Universal suffrage were adopted in early 1900's. 1906 for Finland if I can recall right and for hosting worlds first parliamentary election 1907 with elected women. Situation currently is that men are being beaten up by ladies, which is a day to day news... We try to cope with these issues after ladies were the ones who got beaten up by their husbands (for sure this is an issue still).

Higher education programs are mostly occupied by women. Parental leave, yes, parental, not mothernal leave is granted in shares to be decided by the parents themselves. Our president, our prime minister, 3 out of 5 of the major party leaders are women. And as a funny remark, our parliament formed last year a "mens rights panel" to have a place to ask menly opinion for the issues currently on table.

And as I can talk only about my country and more specifically my generation, there is movement away from genderless roles to adopt more gender specific roles. You know, there are biological differences in genders and we kind of find it out some time ago that it is not satisfying to be same androgynous population as a nation.

Then there are for example ethnic group in china, Mosuo, where lady is the head of the family and men are just their (sex) slaves. Read the article, I bet you will find yourself surprised.

Yesterday I stumbled upon an article about gender's differences in brain. What an article I would say.

Job being advertised with gender specification?! I hope you're joking! Unfortunately remembering where I live, I guess this is not a joke...

Hi Pepso that was a mistype I did mean WITHOUT gender specification.

Yes I am aware that Switzerland has a fairly poor track record re equality however hopefully this report will be a start of serious reform.

I don't expect the western misandry bubble to pop between now and 2013.  I predict the outcome of the program will be to recommend the further marginalization of men in the name of female empowerment and "equality."  I'm not too optimistic here....

Ah, yes, and all we women will jump for joy when we get the equal opportunity to screw up the world financial system, throw millions upon millions of people out of work and their homes, and prosecute wars with the same ineptness and corruption as men.  And after we do that, we'll beg for a government bailout while demanding a bonus,  just because we're arrogant sociopaths.  Can't wait!

Nah, they'd just choke the financial system with regulation until the gears of commerce no longer mesh thereby throwing millions upon millions of men out of work and their homes (free homes for women, of course).  On a brighter note, it'll solve the war problem.  There won't be any money left for military adventures.
