Need help from an internet Guru (website hosting / DNS / IP stuff)

Hello,

I've purchased domain names (1 from godaddy.dom and 1 from switch.ch) and want to creat blog/ websites with Tumblr.com

My problem is that the instructions that Tumblr provides (to change the A REcord / IP address ) is something I can't seem to figure out anywhere from either page, they both just suggest changing the name server.

So I've got a lot of friends that help me out with all sorts of issues, but so far, not internet / website hosting / DNS issues.

Is anyone out there knowledgable on hosting / forwarding / DNS server issues to help me out or offer advice? I'd be really appreciative.  Would even be willing to offer a free Shiatsu session (I'm a professional) for the person who can really help me get this going.

Thanks !

Brittany

The easiest way is to change the name server. The place where you want to host your blog/site should give you 2 domain name servers. They'll look something like this:

ns1.tumbir.com and ns2.timbir.com

or something like that. Then go to Godaddy and log in. In domain management you'll see the domain name you've got and a link to change the DNS or Nameserver.

Just put those two nameservers in and that should be that.

PS if you want me to do it for you, pm me the details and I can change the name servers, etc. I should say that when I'm not trying to make films I run a web hosting/design business!

Depending your budget I suggest you to open an account on http://ovh.com which is really great for noobs as for professionnals... You will also be able to transfert your domain name to your ovh account and they manage every thing. They also have tools to deploy automatically sites like cms (joomla) photo galleries, etc...

I work with them since many years and it's a good hosting reference in europe.

Otherwise you can follow advice of Sean but as you look really not understanding  a lot about web I thing you must think about tools for noobs... ;-)

regards,

K.

The DNS record must match the physical hosted machine ( essentially ).  However you can use Google mail and set the MX record ( Mail eXchange ) to point to Google.  You recieve all mail [email protected] but can read and send from anywhere.  I use this as there is an excellent Blackberry client for Google Mail and it works so well I really recommend this.

Cheers

Login to your GoDaddy account and access the Domain Manager menu. Select the domain name you have bought (ie. "brittanyj.com"). There, you will be asked to enter the IP Address for that domain name. Enter the Tumblr IP address 72.32.231.8

Do the same with Switch.ch

Now log in to Tumblr and click Customize. Under the "Info" settings, check off "Use a custom domain name", and enter your custom domain (ie. "brittanyj.com"). Click "Save Changes".

I'm just not sure if Tumblr allows you to setup two custom domain names for one Tumblr site. There are other workaround to this like DNS forwarding.

Yes - novecento , I've heard these instructions before. These are listed on the Tumblr help page (  http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains  )

My problem is, Switchplus.ch , and even when I tried with GODADDY.COM , they ask for a nameserver - not an IP address. I don't have a nameserver and Tumblr won't give me one.   Switchplus.ch told me on the phone that they don't deal with IP addresses, only Nameservers  - so what next?

KEV303 - I am indeed a noob, however I have used Tumblr.com for a while and am pretty familiar with it and like it. My "website" will actually be a blog, with a www. mywebsite.ch address - so it's bretty easy to manage and maintain, and free.  The only difficult part in the whole process is this issue I'm having now. but thanks for your advice, I'll keep it in mind.

Phil C - I'm not trying to have any mail forwarding / mail anything really . Just send my domain name to function on a blog website. but thank you

Sean Sutton - I may take you up on your help, if you think that you can work around this name server / IP issue.

@brittany any luck, yet? i've just been on GoDaddy today and I think I can help you. I'd have to check with switchplus, though.

Whenever you are free, let me know. I'll come over and get it going.

I actually have my own dedicated host, which I host some of my sites. So I'm more than happy to host your site for free. Just send me the PM.

I have been using Unotelly DNS Service for access to American television online. It is a great service since otherwise the tv websites (netflix, hulu) are blocked in CH. www.unotelly.com
