Yes, that's all the same.

o = octet, which is the French translation of byte (b).

No, they are not all the same.

kb = kilo bit

kB = kilo byte (8 kilo bits)

(in French, ko = kilo octet, i.e., 8 kilo bits = 1 kB)

Technically, the k should be small, not capital, since it is a simple multiplier prefix, only units that correspond to surnames should be capitalized (e.g., kH = kilo Hertz). Some multipliers too, e.g., GHz - gighertz, but not kilo.

The Omega Man's response was exactly what Shirley needed to answer her question. Clearly, her photo is not 28 kilobits. If the french abbreviate KB as ko, then Shirley's question "is ko the same as kb" is an unequivocal YES, pedantics be damned.

People who are technical - and therefore know these technicalities and don't need to ask - will agree with you, mostly. But, I've NEVER seen kilobytes written that way "kB", only "KB". Only nuts and bolts tech people are even aware of kilobits. The average wo/man on the street only knows about kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, etc.

Regarding the "k", it is lower case when talking decimal numbers (1 kB = 1000 bytes) and upper case when talking binary numbers (1 KB = 1024 bytes).

But, again, The Omega Man's answer was really all the Shirley needed.

I am the average woman in the street. If my photo is 28ko does it comply with the size requirements, that is between 10KB and 1MB?

My visa will be refused if not, that's why I'm stressing. Yell

Thankyou for the info, I'm relieved not to have to go into interdiscount to ask them to explain to me what a "byte" is. Embarassed
