No selling of beer after 9?

we've been here for almost over a year and this is the first time we heard it! I ask my husband to buy  Heineken (for cooking purposes) at one of the tabacs store on his way home last night past 9pm. but the guy said "No selling of beer after 9" He went out out of the store and laughed because he thought he was mistaken as a minor (again! this always happened to us in USA)

seriously why is it not allowed? how come when in bars it's okay?

Just go to the next one, and then next one, and then next one and then you find your small place who sells the alcohol despite the time if you just hide it well in the bag :)

Not going to the reasoning itself, but the laws forbidding alchohol sales at night time are there for a good statistical reasons.

According to Addiction Info Suisse, the Canton of Geneva banned sales of alcohol at these points of purchase since 2005 after the passage of a popular initiative.  The group maintains that various international studies confirm the link, in particular, between adolescents and relatively easy access to alcohol. Swiss government health care officials believe there is evidence to show that restriction of sales at these shops seems to be working.  There is a study posted on the website citing evidence to this effect.

Gmel, G., & Wicki, M. (2010). Evaluation des effets sur les intoxications
alcooliques suite aux mesures visant à réduire le degré d’accessibilité à l’alcool
dans le canton de Genève
(Rapport de recherche No 54-B). Lausanne: Addiction Info Suisse

Swissinfo also posted a recent article stating that there is an intiative coming forward to ban "happy hours" in bars on the theory that this practice encourages binge drinking amongst youngsters.

Not saying I agree necessarily . . .Undecided

BTW, what were you making with beer?

Isn't it 9.30?

And yes, it started a few years ago, but honestly once you know it you can more or less plan around and purchase in advance. As it was proven young people (like 16-20) have to go less often drunk to hospitall since the change, it's maybe not that dumb.

And if you've friends coming and nothing to drink, you can always order a pizza with 20 beers, it should work ;)

Women with a handbag to hide stuff in can always buy booze after hours, no worries.

Most small shops just want you to hide it.

Simple
