I live near the Airport, and use them a lot , i have a pair of Panasonic HC 500 noise reducing headphones. They do have a battery and an on off switch for the noise reducing function, which works very well .

You might find happiness with a set of headphones that have good isolation -- the noise-cancelling aspect may not be necessary.  I had a set of Bose that weren't really an improvement over a pair of $70US studio monitors.  The Bose didn't sound nearly as good, either.

I read a lot of reviews in the internet... tried a bunch of headphones... and finally ended up buying the BOSE Quietcomfort 15. It was one of the best investments ever made... these headphones are superb! All the reviews are right... they have the best noise cancellation on the market and the quality is excellent. It also comes with a remote for apple products. So if you own an iPod it will be a perfect fit. I use them on all my flights and just for listening to music at home. It's also perfect for making phone calls since the microphone filters surrounding noise very well.

I share exactly the same view on the BOSE Quietcomfort 15 as Alex.

Having very noisy neighbours these headphones avoided me to look for a new flat.

Ok, they're around CHF 400 (not cheaper in the EU) but they are definitely better than any other brands and this has been proved by experts panels.

The dog of my neighbours wake me up every night around Three so I need to buy one of these head phones...?

I have the Bose QC15s as well. I'm no audio equipment expert and I'm sure there are better headphones out there but for me on any flight I take they're a godsend. Especially for any long haul flight with the strategically place toddler near me who appears that his parents have given him a six pack of Red Bull just before take off. Would really recommend buying them.

can not praise sennheiser headphones enough, the ones that go inside the ear. I have had them for years now, and I literally cant hear people shouting at me if it's on a medium level. And the best part...they cost ~£40 and come with a 2 yr warranty

I like my Sennheisers too. They're compact. Work well enough. Come with a case and adapters for just about every jack. I am sure they're not the very best but the build quality is good and the performance is good enough to drown out most ambient noise.  And they are small enough to fall sleep with them on. Plus they only take a single small AAA battery. And if the battery dies then headphones still work without the noise canceling. 

I may be called a yuppy for this, however I did invest in January in Beats by Dr Dre wireless headphones from media markt (cheapest I found in EU and DXB believe it or not) as I also travel a lot, albeit reluctantly to be part of a fashion, I have to say they are amazing and I drift into a wireless music land no matter where I am without fear of bugging others with my ACDC magic from my Ipad in my case. good charge on them too. 

Wireles Dre Beats do sound noice. How much were they?

On a separate note I have not been happy with my J3 Freedom wireless headset. The sound quality is decent. But the bluetooth range is poor.  I bought them to run and do active things with because they came with a lifetime warrantly against water and sweat damage. If I wear my Ipod on my shoulder or on my upper arm, I am ok. But if I put it in my front pocket I am knackered.

289CHF The wireless range is pretty awesome. I have gone to different rooms and upstairs with them on without moving the Ipad. Also the built in microphone makes Skype calls seamless. You can change track, volume etc all from the ear piece. And when the power does fail, it can be charged by any Micro USB, i.e. I have charged them on the plane from in seat USB ports without having to waste my Laptop power. And worse case plug in the wires and it runs as a normal headset. It was an investment and I can say I had to be physically pushed to the cash register as I never would spend that on ear phones but when I calculated how much I would spend on in ear phones over a year, ithat became victim to pulls and rips or the dog it is worth it. 

I have a set of Sure SE535s. When the music is playing, I cannot hear *anything* other than the music even in loud environments. Don't require any battery, but they are ear-bud style which may not be for everyone.I think the noise reduction circuitry is a bit overrated from the pairs of Bose phones I've heard. I guess it's only really a useful addition if you listen at very low levels.

as a rule, if the company is known for making microphones (a transducer) then they will be great at making headphones (also a transducer, and nearly the same size). 

My experience with noise cancelling is that they are unpleasant if they are the ear-bud type because of the positive pressure sealed inside the pad. so go for over-ear type. 

Noise reducing is done by cancelling frequencies, which is easier to do with lower frequency pitches, but less effective with higher ones (hence why they work so well on the rumble of jey engines on a flight). Good isolating headphones can work better on higher frequencies. Beyerdynamic DT 770 are great and very roomy, which is great for prolonged wearing. The BBC uses them. 

I'm a huge fan of the Audio Technica M-50s. A really great value and just a superb sounding headphone.

Fully agree! Bayerdynamic is pure high tech for your ears... but I guess Jeffrey was searching for some headphones that are good for traveling. Real studio headphones like the ones mentioned are way to big for travelling. They were just not made for this purpose. This is where Bose comes into play... best noise cancellation on the market, small footprint and a great hard shell case.
