Paul - I was taking a slightly more holistic approach rather than $ and cents....if I go back to my homeland and can stand in a river with a fly rod in my hand with absolutely no-one else around, then I consider that I would be extremely wealthy....

Gotta agree....!!
From the article (emphasis is mine):
Switzerland continues to boast the highest average wealth per adult in the world, at $581,000 in 2013
There was a XIX century poet from my country, called Trilussa. He once wrote a sonnet about statistics. The sonnet was saying that if a rich man eats two chickens (a delicacy at Trilussa's times) while a poor man eats nothing, statistically they ate one chicken each.

Or to be a bit more technical, the average is pretty meaningless for data that adheres to some kind of powerlaw.

I heard a different variation of the same statistics story:
A statistics student is sent to poll a building where the inhabitants are 1 pregnant women (9 months in) and 8 virgin women. His report: in the building live 9 pregnant woman in their 1st month of pregnany each.
