I must say that my last visit was a couple of years ago and it wasn't *that*
bad.(After a liter of beer, things start to look *much* better
anyway...)
Question is: what do you expect? If you
want to enter one of the large beer-tents and have no tickets bought in advance, you might
get disappointed: visitors (well, consumers) are lining up at 8 or 9 in the morning already
and will start to hunt down beers immediately after the tents open (10:00 or 9:00 on the
weekends).Accommodation is also notably more expensive during that time of
the year.
But the Oktoberfest is also a large fair-ground with all
kinds of attractions beyond beer-drinking-binges. I could imagine going there (sans tents
and beer-drinking) with kids (well, would have to do a re-evaluation-visit first, after so many
years....).
The German wikipedia-article contains a lot of
information about the event and its
history:http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oktoberfest
