I usually use this for my clients: http://etat.geneve.ch/df/SilverpeasWebFileServer/is_bar_2007.pdf?SpaceId=WA67&ComponentId=kmelia43&SourceFile=1165328084859.pdf&MimeType=application/pdf&Directory=Attachment/Images/&logicalName=is_bar_2007.pdf
You just have to look at the % next to your income, A is you're single, B if you're married without kids. If you've kids, it depends on how many and their age.

Of course that is only if you don't need to fill a "declaration"

.. I now understand that I have to pay social security contributions as well. Any idea where I can get advice on what these might be?

AVS/AI: Mandatory, 5.05% of your income, took straight from your salary.
LPP, "2eme pilier": Your employer pension fund, mendatory, also deduct from your salary. You can sometimes pay more if the plan is good and you want to deduct taxes.
3eme pilier: Usually life insurancies, not mandatory but usually a good thing to have, especially if you're not leaving Switzerland too soon. It's one of the only thing you can deduct from your slary to pay less tax.
If you need more infos, mail me, it's my job ;)

I may well do that it seems to be a bit of a minefield.
