Open discussion: How do you meet people when arriving in a new city ?

Hello everybody !

I'm currently a Student at the HEIG-VD in Yverdon (right at the bottom of the lake of Neuchâtel).  Before that, I lived a couple of years in Geneva, and I met a few expats that showed me glocals, and I was quite surprised of the success of the platform !

Anyway. We have an Android-iPhone app project that might be interesting, depending on how you will answer the following questions, if you have a couple of minutes ! :)

The app would allow you to meet people that are "open for talk" thanks to a radar and a map. You have no way of communicating with these people through the app.

As the title says, the discussion is about arriving in a new city and meeting new people.

So here is a list of 7 questions, but it's really an open discussion so you can answer them the way you want !

Have you ever wanted to talk to a stranger ?

If so, did you ?

if not, why not ?

Is it difficult to talk with a stranger, and if so, why ?

Did it ever happen that a stranger came to speak to you ? What was your reaction ?

Do you think that a tool allowing to facilitate these kind of encounters (NOT an online dating app) would be useful ?

Would you use such a tool ?

Thanks in advance for you answers ! If you think that other information can be useful, don't hesitate to post it :D

Hi,

You may want to make an online survey in a service like https://www.surveymonkey.com/ or similar ... you will get many more answers than if people have to reply you in an open mail.

Just a suggestion.

Have you ever wanted to talk to a stranger ?

occasionally

If so, did you ?

sometimes

if not, why not ?

I'm curious but I'm not sure I have the patience to listen to the answer.

Is it difficult to talk with a stranger, and if so, why ?

In a city yes, because cities are filled with standard people. In the mountains it's much easier because people are more open and relaxed. They're in a better mood as they are enjoying themselves.

Did it ever happen that a stranger came to speak to you ? What was your reaction ?

Yes, in Paris and Geneva to beg for money or to ask for directions. Usually my reaction is Oh f***, what are they going to ask for. I move around too quickly for strangers.

Do you think that a tool allowing to facilitate these kind of encounters (NOT an online dating app) would be useful ?

Glocals is the best tool that I have found so far, at least when speaking of meeting adventurous people. In the golden age of social media when twitter and facebook were social networks rather than popularity contests I met and established friendships with a lot of people.

Would you use such a tool ?

Yep, because I'm an early adopter. I'll even give you free ideas.

The app should allow for people to list the sports that they like to practice:

Caving

Scuba diving

via ferrata

getting drunk

having a good meal

bouldering

rock climbing

swimming

Playing Ingress

and many more options. Whether you want to be a passenger or driver should also be an option.

I would like an adventurous version of Happn. Rather than be yet another dating app I would like it to be an adventure app. I am at my happiest and most receptive when in the mountains having fun so an app that tells me when I am close to someone with the same interests would be interesting.

As we are not all small talking extroverts an app that would help textroverts would be welcome.

In a country like Switzerland such an app would be welcome. We have an excellent playground so we should use that unique selling point as the purpose for an app.
