It's a specific file type that can only be opened with the application used to create it. Many programs create .dat files, such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Corel WordPerfect, Nero ShowTime, Nullsoft Winamp, SoftVelocity Clarion, Ontrack EasyRecovery, Runtime GetDataBack, and MapInfo software.
